Abstract

Fruitvale Station is a movie based on the true story of a shooting at a Fruitvale Station in Oakland, California, by a white police officer named Johannes Mehserle against a black man named Oscar Grant III. Oscar Grant, who was the victim of a conflict on a train that stopped at Fruitvale Station, was instead made a suspect in the incident by police officers who wanted to secure the train and was shot dead without any evidence of guilt or legal proceedings first. Thus, using Gordon Allport's Intentional, Explicit Discrimination theory, the authors analyzed the types of racial discrimination in the movie Fruitvale Station. Racial discrimination includes verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. The author’s method to collect data is qualitative descriptive by examining the Fruitvale Station movie to understand the movie as the primary data. The authors will also include the dialogue from the script as secondary data. The findings of this study reveal five discriminatory behaviors (particularly discrimination based on race) committed by white characters against African-American characters in this movie.

Abstract

This research is entitled “Mass Shooting in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as Seen in “Parkland: Inside Building 12” Documentary Film.” Mass shooting in America, especially in schools is widespread. The issue of gun law and gun ownership in America has become a matter of great concern. Individuals who have reached the age of 18 can easily purchase firearms from a retail without any prerequisites. The research was conducted to describe the motive of the perpetrator doing the shooting and the impact of the shooting on the victims of the Parkland shooting. The research method applied in this research was descriptive qualitative taking the main data the documentary film, videos on YouTube, and interviews from the internet. The behaviourism theory by John Broadus Watson and the Labelling Theory by Howard Saul Becker were applied, as well as the Trauma Concept by Judith Lewis Herman. The finding showed that the perpetrator, Nikolas Cruz has struggled to socialise with her friends from early life, got humiliated and felt rejected by his surroundings. These symptoms led him to trauma and strange behavior. These symptoms caused him to carry out the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. On the other hand, the victims of the Parkland Shooting suffered trauma as can be seen from their reactions and what they told the director of the documentary film. The parents’ victims were also traumatized.

Code-switching is a phenomenon of switching two or more languages that commonly happens to bilinguals and multilinguals. In this digital era, code-switching can be found in almost all social media platforms, one of them is YouTube. This research aims to identify the types code-switching and analyze the reasons for its occurrence spoken by Valerie Thomas in the Puella Id podcast on YouTube. The research applied Poplack's (1980) and Hoffman's (1991) theories. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were Valerie Thomas’s utterances in the form of sentences containing code-switching. The data were collected using the observation method (metode Simak) and analyzed using identity method (metode padan) by Sudaryanto (1993). The result showed 45 utterances with code-switching: three types of code-switching: 4 data in tag switching, 35 data in intra-sentential switching, and 6 data in inter-sentential switching. Whereas, six out of 7 reasons for code-switching appeared in this research: 26 data were talking about a particular topic, 2 data were about quoting somebody else, 5 data were being emphatic about something, 4 data were interjections (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), 3 data were repetition used for clarification, and 5 data were the intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. The researcher did not find any data on expressing group identity.
