Abstract

This study explored the enablers of Madrasah education programs, focusing on locally-led efforts of the Local Government Unit of General Santos to support the traditional Madrasahs in the city, recognizing the vital role of traditional madrasah education in promoting religious and cultural identity as well as social cohesion. This research analyzed the key factors contributing to these educational initiatives' effective implementation and sustainability. A case study method approach was utilized, including surveys and interviews. The findings revealed several critical enablers, such as active community involvement, government assistance, and capacity building. This paper underscores the significance of the all-of-the-community approach in creating an inclusive educational environment that meets the needs of Muslim learners. Hence, the analysis concluded that contextual factors such as social, economic, environmental, and political dimensions affect the implementation of the traditional Madrasah in General Santos City. Abstract

Madrasah education has played a crucial role in the educational landscape of Mindanao, Philippines, particularly for Muslim communities. Traditional Madaris provide religious instruction and support for Muslim students' cultural identity. The government has been supporting the integration of Madrasah into the mainstream through different legislations, policies, peace agreements and educational reforms. Yet, challenges still exist in providing and satisfying the academic needs of Muslim learners, especially in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. This study explored the social and political factors shaping the Madrasah educational System in the communities surrounding the Ligawasan Marsh within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. It offered recommendations to transform the Madrasah educational system. Findings revealed that social dimensions in shaping the implementation of the Traditional Madrasah include the selective implementation of the Refined Standard Madrasah Curriculum, increasing need for a balanced education, gender disparity in Madrasah attendance, decreasing trend in the learning outcomes, multilingual instruction and the unpredictable vulnerability of these Madaris to extreme and violent ideologies. On the other hand, political dimensions consist of increasing efforts in reforming Madrasah Education, changing political leadership and landscape, absence of a standardised practice for Madrasah teachers and introducing new administrative procedures and regulations. This paper recommends a comprehensive curriculum to include peace concepts, continuing education for teachers, strategic & complementary partnerships among stakeholders of Madrasah education, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for the learning outcomes and policy support, advocacy & communication. This is to ensure inclusive and culturally responsive policies for a sustainable future of the Muslim children in Ligawasan and areas where there are Bangsamoro learners.

Abstract

Recognizing the Arabic alphabet and its corresponding sounds can be challenging for Muslim learners in Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education (ALIVE) classes. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Majmaea مجمعة Puzzle, an interactive strategy designed to enhance Arabic alphabet knowledge and sound recognition among Grade I to Grade III learners in the Arabic Literacy and Values Education program at NASA Elementary School during the academic year 2022-2023. Employing a single-subject experimental design, 31 selected pupils participated in the study, with assessments conducted through pre-tests and post-tests. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics and t-tests for dependent samples, were utilized to the data. The findings indicated that before the implementation of Majmaea Puzzle, learners exhibited a very low level of Arabic knowledge and sound recognition, with a mean score of 35%. Contributing factors included difficulties in phonological awareness and limited engagement with traditional teaching methods. Following the intervention, there was a significant improvement, with a post-test mean score of 81%, demonstrating that the interactive and contextualized nature of the Majmaea Puzzle effectively facilitated learning. The results suggest that incorporating interactive strategies like the Majmaea Puzzle can significantly improve the Arabic literacy of young learners. Hence, it is recommended that educators implement this approach to foster better engagement and proficiency in Arabic language skills.
