Abstract

The present study focuses on the languages operating on the written signage that contribute directly to theformation of the linguistic landscape. The study chose Sunan Ampel Tomb in Surabaya, Indonesia, as one ofthe sites that has become a heritage conservation due to the history hidden in the site. This site is a part of the other sites in a series leading to the history of nine saints (Wali Songo) who brought Islam to Indonesia through one of the islands, Java. The study aimed at describing the linguistic landscape of the site to help learn about the languages operating on the signage found in Sunan Ampel Tomb complex and the hidden history leading to multilingual multilingualism in the area. By using a direct observation and interview to gather the data, the study informs that the sites are typically dominated with Indonesian language operating in monolingualsignage. Despite a few in number, the multilingual signage can still be found to depict several languages including English, Arabic, and Indonesian language. The domination of Bahasa Indonesian demonstrates the implementation of policy for using the language as the national language. While English and Arabic are used for the business purpose. The study also discovers the characteristics of the language displaying on the signage from the size of the fonts. In conclusion, linguistic landscape in Sunan Ampel Tomb describes the history of how the saint brought Islam to the society. Arabic artifacts stereotyping Islam existence can hardly be found here, and it becomes a proof the saint taught Islam without trying to change the already existing customs, cultures, and languages as well.

Abstract

This current study aims to discuss the collective religious narcissism in social media accounts in a pragmatic study. It tries to scrutinize the functions and the strategies of illocutionary acts used in the collective religious narcissism discourses of young Indonesian Muslims on Instagram. This study is descriptive qualitative research, and the data are the collective religious narcissism discourses taken from the Instagram captions of three young Indonesian Muslim accounts, namely Pemuda Muhammadiyah (PM), Generasi Muda NU (GMNU), and Indonesia Tanpa Pacaran (ITP). In analyzing the data, Searle's (1979) speech act classification and Meyer's (2009) speech act strategies are applied to achieve the aim of this study. The results show that illocutionary acts in the collective religious narcissism discourses are presented in several functions, such as to state some affairs (representatives), to invite the readers, especially the cadres, to join the organization activities and to prohibit the cadres from doing something that is not in line with the ingroup’s beliefs (directives), to express congratulation and to say thanks and wishes (expressives), to commit a future action responding recent issues (commissives), and to declare or confirm organization agendas that bring a change on the next day (declarations). In the strategies of the illocutionary acts in the collective religious narcissism discourses, the results show that PM, ITP, and GMNU use similar strategies which are direct, explicit, and implicit.

Abstract

This current study investigates the languages used in the linguistic landscape of a heritage tourism place, Bandar Grissee, Gresik, Indonesia. A total of 125 signs were collected through observation and photograph methods. These signs were then analyzed with focusing on the language choices and the strategy of the languages and the information presented in the signages. The results show that the languages used in the linguistic landscape of Bandar Grissee, both in top-down and bottom-up signs, are presented in the same categories: monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual. However, the language choices vary significantly among the signs. The salience of Indonesian and languages related to the cultural and historical values, such as Javanese, Chinese, Arabic, and Dutch, clearly appears in top-down signs, while bottom-up signs predominantly feature English, which is appealing for commercial purposes. The strategy of the languages and information presented in each sign is also different. Top-down signs predominantly use monolingual languages, while bilingual and multilingual signs employ the overlapping and fragmentary strategies. Conversely, bottom-up signs predominantly use bilingual languages with the fragmentary strategy. These results conclude that signmakers have a significant impact on the languages used, both in the language choices and the strategy, in the linguistic landscape of Bandar Grissee to reach their own goals on making the signages. Thus, the linguistic landscape could be a potential tool for the establishment of sustainable tourism and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by preserving cultural heritage.

Abstract

Despite the history of the 30th of September Movement (Gerakan Tiga Puluh September, G30S) incident and the Indonesian diasporas' status as exiles with feelings of being haunted and separated from their homeland, many Indonesians currently reside abroad. This current study aims to uncover and scrutinize language barriers among Indonesian diasporas in Glasgow, focusing on language barriers encountered, the effects of the language barriers, and adaptation strategies to face the language barriers. The findings of this study uncover that the Indonesian diasporas in Glasgow encompass the language barriers in Glaswegian accents, vocabularies or slang, and the fast pace of Glaswegian speech. The language barrier has significantly affected their living in Glasgow, especially regarding their communication with the locals and their emotional responses. In navigating the language barriers and adjusting to their new environment, the Indonesian diasporas employ various strategies, such as engaging with locals and learning through entertainment. In shedding light on the language barriers experienced by the Indonesian diasporas in Glasgow, this study highlights the imperative to learn and understand the cultures of host countries aimed at mitigating the challenges and obstacles while living over there.

Abstract

This research examines how generational differences are reflected in conversational interactions, particularly in turn-taking behavior in public discourse. As intergenerational communication becomes increasingly common in the media, differences in communication styles often lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, or perceived power imbalances. This research investigates turn-taking strategies used by boomers, Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z in the Mata Najwa talk show episode '4 Generasi Bicara Generation Gap'. The data were the utterances of Slamet Rahardjo Djarot (as a boomer), Panji Pragiwaksono (as a Gen X), Felicia Putri Tjiasaka (as a millennial), and Muharam Fachri (as a Gen Z). The data were taken from Mata Najwa's talk show '4 Generasi Bicara Generation Gap' episode on Najwa Shihab's YouTube channel. Then, the data were analyzed using Stenstrom's turn-taking theory to achieve the goal. The results revealed that boomers, Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z use similar turn-taking strategies, namely taking the turn, holding the turn, and yielding the turn. However, they have different sub-strategies and different ways to take the turn, to hold the turn, and to yield the turn. The most dominant strategy used by all generations is to take the turn. This strategy is used by them when they want to evaluate the previous speaker before expressing their opinion. This talk show is dominated by discussion, so the uptake strategy is relevant for all generations during the conversations. This finding suggests that intergenerational communication in media spaces is characterized by responsiveness and dialogue, rather than dominance. The uptake strategy reflects a communicative norm that emphasizes attentiveness, evaluation, and mutual respect, as reflected in broader social expectations in today's public discourse.

Abstract

This study investigates how cultural representation is constructed in Indonesian EFL textbooks and mediated through teacher cognition in classroom practice. Using a qualitative case study design, the research analyzed five selected chapters from the Grade 10 English textbook Work in Progress and conducted semi-structured interviews with three EFL teachers in Gresik, East Java. The study employed qualitative content analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, and teacher cognition theory to examine textual, visual, and pedagogical dimensions of culture. The findings indicate that globalized or modernized culture dominates textbook representation, while Indonesian culture is embedded implicitly through collaborative classroom practices and native-speaker culture receives limited representation. The study also reveals that teachers play an important mediating role in interpreting cultural content. However, classroom practices tend to prioritize communicative competence over explicit intercultural reflection due to curriculum demands, assessment orientation, and time constraints. Consequently, cultural learning remains largely implicit and less critically developed. The findings suggest that cultural representation in EFL classrooms emerges dynamically through the interaction between materials, pedagogy, and teacher cognition. This study highlights the importance of explicit intercultural pedagogy and teacher preparation in supporting intercultural competence development in Indonesian EFL contexts.
