Abstract

This research was conducted due to the low reading proficiency of students in school. The implementation of the Klos method in reading instruction is an effort to address this issue. The objective of this study is to enhance the effective reading speed of students in Grade XI IPA1 at SMA Negeri 3 Bangko Pusako by utilizing the Klos method. The research involved a sample of 32 students throughout three instructional cycles. The data analysis technique used was qualitative analysis, applied to qualitative data obtained from observations of students and teachers during classroom instruction. Quantitative analysis was conducted on the results of the students' effective reading speed test using the Klos method. In the first cycle, the reading comprehension was still considerably low with an average of 85.54 words per minute (wpm), an independent level of 81.25%, an instructional level of 40.61%, and a frustration level of 40.62%. In the second cycle, positive changes were observed, with the average effective reading speed reaching 156.88 wpm. The independent level achieved was 71.87%, the instructional level was 6.25%, and the frustration level was 9.37%. In the third cycle, the average effective reading speed further increased to 204.02 wpm, reaching a 100% independent level. The analysis results demonstrate that students' effective reading speed can be improved with the assistance of rapid reading activities taught using the Klos method.

Abstract

Epistemology is one of the three branches of philosophy that deals with science besides ontology and axiology. This scientific foundation is related to the use of this knowledge in order to meet human needs. Language and society can never be separated from one another, because where there is society, there is language, and vice versa. The existence of language in society is studied through sociolinguistics, which sees language as a means of communication between community members with variations according to their social sphere. On the other hand, traditional language teaching views language as a system, thus giving birth to structuralist language teaching. During its development, the proponents of the language teaching method realized that language was not just a system, but rather a means of communication, as studied through sociolinguistics. This study discusses the role of sociolinguistics in the development of language teaching, starting from the characteristics of the language community, language functions, to sociolinguistic-based language teaching models. The material in language teaching also reviews the contribution of sociolinguistics in providing language teaching materials from a sociolinguistic point of view. Keywords: Epistemology, Sociolinguistics, Language Teaching

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability to write exposition texts of students in learning Indonesian. This is due to the use of learning media that is still less varied. This study aims to improve the ability to write exposition texts of students with the help of audio-visual media. The research method used in this study is a quantitative research method with an experimental approach. The type of experiment in this study is a quasi-experimental (quasi-experimental) with one group pretest-posttest design. The population in this study were students of class X SMA Negeri 3 Bangko Pusako Riau registered for the 2020/2021 school year with a total of 162 students. The research sample is class X IPA I as many as 34 people obtained by purposive sampling technique. The instrument used is an exposition text writing skill performance test with three indicators, namely the structure of the exposition text, the use of Indonesian spelling, and the function of the expository text. The data collected were analyzed by the teacher giving scores of the results of the exposition text writing skills test based on predetermined indicators. The results showed that the use of audiovidual media can improve the ability to write expository texts, both in terms of process and results. In the process, the improvement is seen in the learning process that is getting better and more enjoyable. As a result, the increase in learning outcomes can be seen from the average grade obtained.
