Abstract

Opportunities and Challenges of Using AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Biochemistry Learning aims to describe how artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely applied in education. Artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) opens up new opportunities, potentials and challenges in educational practice. In its short history, AIEd has undergone several paradigmatic shifts, which are characterized into three paradigms in this journal position: AI-directed, the learner as recipient, AI-supported, the learner as collaborator, and AI-empowered, the learner as leader. Within these three paradigms, AI techniques are used to address Biochemistry education and learning problems in various ways. AI is used to represent knowledge models and direct cognitive learning while learners are recipients of AI services in Paradigm One; AI is used to support Biochemistry learning while learners work as collaborators with AI in Paradigm Two; AI is used to empower learning while learners take the role to learn in Paradigm Three. Overall, the development trend of AIEd has evolved to empower learner education and personalization programs, enable learners to reflect on Biochemistry learning and inform AI systems to adapt, and lead to the iterative development of learner-centered, learner-driven Biochemistry learning.

Abstract

This tree-planting activity was conducted in response to increasing environmental degradation and the decline of green open spaces caused by rapid development and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. The activity took place on 27 September 2025 at the Education and Training Center Area of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, Bollangi, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, with the aim of transforming underutilized land into a productive green area with both ecological and economic value. The implementation consisted of two stages: preparation and planting of 200 fruit tree seedlings, including durian, soursop, jackfruit, and crystal guava. The results show that all seedlings were successfully planted in locations appropriate for soil conditions and sunlight exposure, supported by active participation from the participants throughout all stages. The activity not only contributed to increasing green coverage but also enhanced participants’ understanding and environmental awareness through brief training and education. Ecologically, the fruit trees planted have the potential to support carbon absorption, improve air quality, strengthen soil stability, and promote biodiversity. Economically, these trees hold promising value as future sources of marketable fruits and local food diversification. Therefore, this tree-planting initiative can be considered a long-term environmental and economic investment aligned with the principles of sustainable development.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an assessment instrument to measure 21st-century skills—critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication (4C)—in the context of social interaction learning for tenth-grade high school students. This research is grounded in the practical challenges faced by teachers, particularly the difficulty of assessing 4C competencies systematically due to the absence of standardized and context-specific assessment instruments in Sociology learning. In many schools, assessment practices still focus on cognitive outcomes, leaving social and interaction-based competencies underassessed. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Lee and Owens model, which includes five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through teacher needs assessment questionnaires involving eight Sociology teachers, expert validation by three assessment specialists, and field trials with 45 students. Instrument validity was examined using Aiken’s V, while reliability was measured using Fleiss’ Kappa. Practicality was evaluated through questionnaires administered to teachers and students. The results indicate that the developed instrument demonstrates high content validity (Aiken’s V > 0.8), substantial to almost perfect inter-rater reliability, and high practicality, with teacher and student practicality scores of 100% and 80%, respectively. These findings suggest that the instrument is feasible and effective for classroom use. The developed assessment tool provides teachers with a practical means to evaluate students’ 4C skills in social interaction contexts, thereby supporting competency-based assessment practices in Sociology learning.
