Abstract

This study reports on how the studies concerning second language acquisition (SLA) in Indonesia have been conducted in association to the teaching and learning activities of young language learners and to what extent the studies contribute to the development of SLA in Indonesia. Language acquisition (LA) is related to the way individuals acquire the target language for its words, structures, meaning, pragmatics and so forth. However, previous research reviewing young EFL learners’ language acquisition in the Indonesian EFL context is still limited. Therefore, a total of 40 selected papers was reviewed to find out the current state of SLA in Indonesian. According to the outcome of the review, SLA in the Indonesian context has been investigated regarding the beginning processes of TEYL, the teaching-learning strategies, the teaching media, the teaching methods, young learners' language developments, the advantages and disadvantages of learning English. The present paper presents possible suggestions for English teachers, school administrators, and parents to be involved in teaching and learning English for young learners in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

ABSTRACTTeaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) is different from teaching adults. In realizing it, principles and techniques of TEYL are necessary to be mastered by teachers. Unfortunately, inadequacy of elementary school teachers having a teaching qualification and a background of english education in the schools has been a real impediment. Accordingly, the lecturers in English department FKIP Suryakancana University conducted a community service through a workshop on Principles and Techniques of Teaching English to Young Learners for English teachers who teach at elementary schools in Kecamatan Cugenang.  Employing a qualitative descriptive approach through observations and questionnaire for 30 teachers involved in the workshop, this paper aims to portray activities carried out during a workshop held specifically for introducing the principles and techniques of TEYL and to investigate the teachers’ responses to the implementation of the workshop. The result showed that techniques of teaching English in the event were carried out by making use of flashcards, games, songs, and stories. Besides, the teachers responded positively, which could be seen from their participation in each activity and their willingness to continually get involved in the similar event.

Abstract

This systematic literature review explores the strategies and challenges involved in integrating technology into the English learning process, with a focus on the perspectives of teachers and students. Although many studies have highlighted the benefits of technology in English teaching and learning, systematic reviews that compile strategies and challenges from both teacher and student perspectives are still limited. Both perspectives are crucial, as teachers determine pedagogical implementation and students respond to technology in learning practice. This study analyzes17 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2022 and 2025and synthesizing key findings on how strategies and challenges of digital tools in English language teaching and learning. These studies reveal that technology offers substantial benefits such as increased engagement, creativity, and accessibility, but its implementation faces various obstacles. These obstacles include limited ICT proficiency, insufficient administrative and technical support, infrastructure deficiencies (particularly in rural settings), low levels of digital literacy, student autonomy issues, and concerns over academic integrity. Educators have adopted adaptive strategies including ongoing professional development, peer collaboration, reflective teaching practices, and blended learning models to address these barriers, while the students form peer support networks to improve their digital learning experiences. This review highlights the importance of a comprehensive, multi-levelapproach that combines individual skill development with systemic infrastructure, policy support, and inclusive educational practices. In conclusion, this review calls for a shift from mere technology adoption to a deeper pedagogical transformation.
