Abstract

This paper aims to examine from the perspective of Christian theology the Mohatu tradition, which is still practiced among the Saluan tribe in Simpang II village. The Mohatu tradition is a ritual for releasing the spirits of the dead, carried out 16 days after death, by placing seven to nine types of garden produce on the deceased's grave. Then the spirits will no longer come to collect garden produce which can result in crop failure. The research method is ethnography, with in-depth interviews as a data collection technique. Data were analyzed with reduction, display, and conclusion techniques. The informants involved totaled 15, consisting of traditional leaders and community leaders of the Saluan tribe, as well as Pastors and Congregational Councils who serve in the Saluan tribe. The study results show that the Mohatu tradition is a medium for the Saluan tribe to deal with farmers' crop failures. In the Mohatu tradition, spirits are believed to remain in the world (graves) and carry out their usual activities, including gardening. Because of that, the spirits can still interfere with plantation activities. This tradition needs to be transformed because it has the potential to slow down the development and use of agricultural technology by the Saluan people. Transformation is possible with a religious approach through contextualizing Christian theology about death. In Christian theology, God has power over life and death. After humans die physically, their spirits will return to God, so no more spirits in this world can affect human life.

Abstract

Worship is the central activity of the church, but many churches whose congregation members are less active in worship. Several studies have shown that the cell group approach can encourage church members to worship actively. The Banggai Protestant Independent Congregation (PJM-PB) of the Pondan Korampotan Congregation also faces the same problem, but until now, the cell group approach has not been used in ministry. This study examines the potency of the cell group approach in increasing the attendance of church members in worship at the Pondan Korampotan Congregation. The method used is qualitative, with interviews as a data collection technique. Data analysis uses reduction, display, and conclusion techniques. The number of informants involved was 13, including pastors, church boards and church members. The study results show that the cell group approach is very potential to be implemented in the Pondan Korampotan Congregation because all informants view this approach as essential and believe that if implemented in the congregation, it will encourage increased congregation member participation in worship. The reasons put forward to support this opinion include: 1) cell group makes it easier for God's servants in the congregation to reach all members, including members who are not active; 2) cell group provides space for all members to participate actively; 3) in the cell group, the relationship between members is intimate, mutually supportive, and sharing.

Abstract

This study focuses on the quality of sermon delivery at the Independent Congregational Fellowship (ICF) Korampotan Pondan, aiming to understand the congregation’s perception of the effectiveness of verbal and non-verbal communication used by the preacher. The quality of sermon delivery plays an essential role in building the congregation’s engagement and understanding of spiritual messages, particularly for older congregants. This research employed a quantitative method with a survey approach, involving 95 randomly selected respondents. Data were collected through a questionnaire using a Likert scale and analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that congregants responded positively to aspects of voice clarity, intonation, and sermon duration, which were considered effective in maintaining their attention. On the non-verbal side, the preacher’s authoritative appearance, use of hand gestures, and eye contact were also seen as supporting emotional connection and preacher credibility. However, there remains a need to enhance the relevance of sermon content to the daily lives of the congregation. These findings contribute to an understanding of the importance of adjusting sermon communication methods based on the characteristics of the congregation and are expected to serve as a foundation for developing communication skills in church ministry.
