Abstract

Ideally, mathematics learning in early grades uses concrete object manipulation. However, in grade I of SD Negeri Tanjungrejo 1, 40% of students have not achieved the minimum mastery criteria (KKM) in understanding basic arithmetic concepts due to reliance on passive digital media (PPT and video). This study aims to describe the improvement of basic arithmetic concept understanding through the application of the Discovery Learning model assisted by MATOKA (Matematika Boneka) manipulative media. The research method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles with 28 first-grade students as subjects. Data collection techniques included evaluation tests and learning activity observation. The results showed a significant improvement. The data recorded an increase in the class average score from 62 in the pre-cycle, to 71 in Cycle I, and reaching 83 in Cycle II. The percentage of classical completeness also increased sharply from 60% to 89% at the end of the action. Based on these results, it is concluded that the collaboration of the Discovery Learning model and MATOKA media is highly effective in improving students' understanding of basic arithmetic concepts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low learning activeness of fourth-grade students at SDN Tanjungrejo 1, characterized by students frequently walking around the classroom and engaging in conversations unrelated to the lesson. Only approximately 25.9% of students were able to sit quietly and focus on learning. This condition resulted in low learning outcomes, with average scores of 62.5 in IPAS and 63.0 in Indonesian Language, both below the learning mastery criterion (KKTP) of 75. This study aims to improve student activeness and learning outcomes through the application of deep learning-oriented group discussion strategies in IPAS (Cultural Diversity chapter) and Indonesian Language (Origins of the Indonesian People). This Classroom Action Research (PTK) was conducted in two cycles involving 27 fourth-grade students. Results showed that the average IPAS score increased from 79.00 (Cycle I) to 93.30 (Cycle II), while Indonesian Language scores rose from 79.37 to 94.78. The mastery rate improved from 81.5% in Cycle I to 100% in Cycle II. It is concluded that the deep learning-oriented group discussion strategy effectively improves the activeness and learning outcomes of fourth-grade students at SDN Tanjungrejo 1.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was initiated by the low mathematics learning outcomes and the passive learning attitudes of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Tanjungrejo 01. Ideally, mathematics instruction should be active, meaningful, and student-centered. This study aimed to improve students' active engagement and mathematics learning outcomes through the implementation of a game-based Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach. The research method followed the CAR design proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart, conducted over two cycles. Each cycle comprised planning, action, observation, and reflection phases, with an allocation of 3 lesson periods (JP) per meeting. The subjects of this study were 25 fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Tanjungrejo 01. Data collection techniques included learning outcome tests, student activity observation sheets, and documentation. The initial diagnostic assessment (pre-cycle) revealed that 11 students scored below the Learning Objectives Fulfillment Criteria (KKTP). Following the implementation of the actions up to cycle II by integrating the game-based TaRL approach, the learning atmosphere became considerably more conducive, students participated more actively, and their mathematics learning outcomes improved significantly at the end of the cycle, leaving only 2 students scoring below the KKTP. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the game-based TaRL approach is proven effective in enhancing the active engagement and mathematics learning outcomes of fifth-grade students.
