Abstract

This meta–analysis examines the far–reaching effects of long COVID (LC), highlighting the need for welfare strategies emphasizing the Parity of Esteem. The analysis of clinical studies reveals the prevalence of LC across various demographic factors, including age, gender, infection type, and severity. The findings highlight persistent pulmonary impairments that result in post-COVID pulmonary fibrosis (PCPF), long-term cardiovascular symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, dermatological concerns, and neuropsychiatric outcomes. These effects continue beyond the acute phase of COVID-19, affecting both symptomatic and asymptomatic people. The study emphasizes that LC is not only a physical ailment but also has a significant impact on mental health, necessitating a holistic approach to healthcare. Psychological and emotional distress among LC patients necessitates empathetic support. This study concludes by emphasizing the significance of LC and advocating for data-driven healthcare policies and assistance programs to address the unique challenges encountered by COVID-19 survivors. For managing the long-term effects of LC on both physical and mental health, an unwavering commitment to parity of esteem is crucial.

Abstract

Public health surveillance indicates that the country's HIV infection rate is rising, with the Western Pacific region experiencing the highest growth. Due to the scarcity of studies on HIV in the nation, the present state of the HIV epidemic must be ascertained by gathering data from public health surveillance and HIV mortality time trend analysis. The Department of Health's Philippine Health Statistics (PHS) provided the information. The PHS-recommended algorithms for vital health indicators were used to calculate mortality rates. According to the study's findings, the death rate in the nation is rising, necessitating tight efforts to stop the virus's transmission and provide access to anti-retroviral therapy. Although there is a considerable difference between the two sexes, men had a greater mortality rate than women, suggesting that men were more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS mortality. The study also revealed that HIV testing hurdles were to blame for making young to middle-aged individuals the population most susceptible to mortality from this illness. Additionally, the National Capital Region has the most significant mortality rate, so the government should focus on promoting health in this area as it has the highest mortality rate.

Abstract

In the Philippines, kidney disease is acknowledged as a significant public health issue as it causes considerable suffering, negatively impacts health, and possibly death to people inflicted it, this is despite the available programs and efforts to combat these diseases. This study evaluated and analyzed six decades of data (1960-2019) from Philippine Health Statistics to provide precise and valid information regarding its mortality trend and to assess the country’s improvement in effectively dealing with these diseases. Factors such as gender, geographical location, and lifestyle were found to affect kidney disease chances. We also found out that there are age and gender disparities in the vulnerability of the people of the Philippines to kidney diseases, with elderly ages 70 and up and males recorded to be at greater risk of dying due to it. Differences in the regional outcome were also observed with Region XII having the highest mortality rate, and Region ARMM having the lowest. Urgent need to expand treatment advancements and programs for the population is needed to decrease the burden of kidney disease in the country in the following years.

Abstract

This study investigates the transmission, impact, and prevention of viral hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis D (HDV), and hepatitis E (HEV) in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Region 7, Philippines, from 1960 to 2020. These infections significantly contribute to liver complications, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, affecting mental well-being and posing risks to pregnant women. Although hepatitis mortality is notable, complete treatment can mitigate the risk. Transmission occurs through various routes, such as blood products, body secretions, and perinatal routes. The study underscores the importance of understanding transmission and implementing screening and prevention measures. Vaccination, particularly for Hepatitis A and B, is crucial, reshaping disease epidemiology through universal infant immunization. Challenges like low vaccination coverage persist, especially among children and healthcare workers. Analyzing mortality data reveals a significant recent decrease attributed to government efforts and vaccination programs since 1995. Despite regional variations, mortality remains relatively low. The study recommends prioritizing and expanding vaccination programs, raising awareness, improving healthcare accessibility, and strengthening surveillance systems. Coupled with community engagement, these measures promise sustained success against viral hepatitis, reinforcing the observed trend in mortality reduction.

Abstract

Certain areas of the Philippines continue to rely on traditional non-pharmacological approaches, such as herbal medicine, for hypertension treatment, a significant public health problem globally. Therefore, a systematic review of plants used in the Philippines to treat hypertension, based on the PRISMA flow diagram, was carried out. Relevant ethnobotanical studies were retrieved from databases such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed. Following the eligibility screening, 36 ethnobotanical studies were included. The majority of the studies included in this review came from Region XIII (CARAGA), Region VI (Western Visayas), and Region X (Northern Mindanao). The most prevalent plant family and species were Poaceae (12 species) and Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf. (16 citations), respectively. Leaves were the most common plant parts utilized while decoction was the most frequently mentioned mode of preparation. Oral administration was the most widely used form of administration. This review highlights medicinal plants with potential antihypertensive properties. It underscores the need to conduct a systematic review of their pharmacological properties to determine which have been scientifically validated and are most effective against hypertension.

Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the overall acceptance of evolution among undergraduate students in a State University as basis for developing a STEM-based instructional design to address the misconceptions about evolution. The research was conducted using the 20-item questionnaires of the Measurement of Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution (MATE) instrument assessing undergraduate students' acceptance of evolution in relations to; the process of evolution, the scientific validity of the evolutionary theory, the evolution of humans, evidence of evolution, scientific community's view of evolution and age of the Earth. The study is within a quantitative and qualitative framework using descriptive and inferential analysis. The findings revealed that all the colleges in the science group acquired a moderate level of acceptance except for the CED non-science group who received a low degree of acceptance of the theory of evolution. Although among the six concepts in the study, they generally agree on the statements and only in the idea on the age of the earth where the students were undecided. This research confirms that the level of acceptance is not positively related to the students' specialization. Based on the result of this study there is a need to develop a STEM based instructional design and this should be emphasized in the science curriculum. The teaching design will fill in the gaps in understanding concepts of evolution and its significance to the lives of many organisms and for the teachers to look evolution from very broad flexible and interdisciplinary perspectives.
