Abstract

ABSTRACT Gestational anemia remains a pressing public health concern due to its well-documented link with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity. Iron (Fe) tablet supplementation is widely endorsed as an evidence-based preventive measure, yet consistent adherence among pregnant women frequently remains suboptimal in primary care settings. The critical importance of adherence escalates during the second and third trimesters, as fetal demands for iron increase substantially. This study investigates whether a statistically meaningful association exists between the level of Fe tablet adherence and the occurrence of anemia among second- and third-trimester pregnant women attending Jetis Primary Health Center, Yogyakarta City. A cross-sectional analytical observational approach was employed, encompassing all second- and third-trimester pregnant women who received antenatal services at Jetis Primary Health Center. Purposive sampling with predetermined inclusion criteria was applied. Data collection utilized structured questionnaires and maternal health records (KIA books); anemia status was determined through hemoglobin (Hb) laboratory assessment. The Chi-Square test was employed to evaluate associations between study variables. Descriptively, non-adherent pregnant women tended to show higher rates of anemia than their adherent counterparts. Statistically, however, the test returned a p-value of 0.277 (p > 0.05), confirming the absence of a statistically significant relationship between Fe tablet consumption adherence and anemia incidence in second- and third-trimester pregnant women at Jetis Primary Health Center. Conclusion: No statistically meaningful association was demonstrated between Fe tablet adherence and anemia incidence in this population.
