Abstract

Using three components of PLCs by DuFour (2004), I explored the learning communities at LATTICE (Linking All Types of Teachers to International, Cross-cultural Education). DuFour (2004) argued that PLCs is a form of learning communities held at the school level to improve the school quality. It means PLCs happen in the school context. However, Easton (2011) contended that learning community could happen inside or outside schools. This paper intends to analyze a learning community at LATTICE in creating more global perspective teachers. The study found that PLC s can also occur outside schools by including participants other than teachers. Based on the interviews and observations analysis, this study found that LATTICE did reflect PLCs and significantly helped K-12 educators foster their global understanding.

Abstract

The enactment of Ministerial Decree of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, the Republic of Indonesia Number 56/ M/ 2022 on the Guidance of Curriculum Implementation for Learning Recovery in early 2022 has marked the implementation of a new curriculum, namely ‘Kurikulum Merdeka’ or Freedom Curriculum in Indonesian educational system. The new curriculum brings certain novelties as compared to the previous (Curriculum 2013), for instance focusing on essential contents, providing freedom to students, teachers, and school in the implementation, and employing relevant and interactive activities in learning through project works. To successfully implement Kurikulum Merdeka, the curriculum users, particularly teachers, have to gain solid understanding about the curriculum. Hence, working with Dunia Akademisi, Bina Nusantara (Binus) University organized a workshop on Kurikulum Merdeka targeting teachers and teacher students throughout Indonesia. The workshop focused on discussing theories from which the curriculum had been developed and ways to use it in the classroom. The event was carried out online by using Zoom and YouTube and attended by 300 and over 2.000 participants in each respective platform. By their participation in the workshop, they were expected to have better understanding and readiness to implement the curriculum in their schools as well as classrooms. In overall, the participants were satisfied with the overall organization of the event and the speakers, found the event fulfilling their expectation, and gained useful lesson from the event. Certain recommendations were yielded, which are increasing Zoom capacity, carrying out better preparation, and making the event into a series instead.

Abstract

The Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata - KKN) is one of the flagship programs of universities that provides students with experience and opportunities to serve the community. Through designed and implemented work programs, students can directly apply the knowledge learned in lectures to society. To promote, engage, and succeed in KKN programs, students, lecturers, and the community require communication tools to facilitate every activity agenda. One effective communication medium adaptable to current developments is social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, blogs, YouTube, and Twitter. Social media has become an effective tool in implementing education and community service processes. Studies on the use of social media in learning at schools and universities have been widely conducted by researchers (e.g., Hudson et al., 2020; Harris, 2020; Kuswardhani, 2020); however, evaluations of social media usage in community service activities remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore the use of social media in implementing the 2021 Community Service Program. The ultimate goal of this research is to provide input for communities, lecturers, students, and policymakers in their efforts to enhance the quality of community service programs in the form of KKN. Using semi-structured interviews and observations involving 10 students from three regencies in Jambi Province, this study finds that social media serves three primary functions for students in community service programs: (1) as a medium for positive campaigns; (2) to disseminate information about social movements; and (3) as a tool for accountability and transparency.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum is part of an effort to align Indonesia’s education system with the needs and developments of the times. One of the implementations of the Merdeka Curriculum is carried out in schools, including in the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) subject. As we know, PAI plays a crucial role in shaping the moral and spiritual character of students. This research aims to analyze the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in PAI at senior high schools. The primary focus of this research is to see how far these changes can improve teaching quality, support diverse approaches, and address educational challenges faced by both teachers and students who are the subjects of this study. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach with interview and observation techniques conducted on teachers and students. The research findings indicate significant changes. These include providing teachers with the flexibility to design and plan the learning process and methods, incorporating diverse and creative approaches tailored to students’ needs. The Merdeka Curriculum also provides more space for students to excel not only in academics but also in other areas. Differentiated learning allows students to gain learning experiences that are not solely focused on competencies, as well as addressing challenges that often arise and become concerns in implementing this curriculum.
