Abstract

This article is about history of ancient Israel in biblical era and how the sacred scripture introduces information of the ancient people. We have to know how to read the scriptures. They demand an imaginative effort, as Karen Armstrong said, that can sometimes be as perplexing and painful job. The true meaning of scriptures can never be wholly comprised in a literal reading of the text, since that text points beyond itself to reality that cannot be totally grasp. Our academic world cultivates us to look for the words between the lines. We expect a text to express its idea as clearly as possible. In a philosophical or historical work, we will often judge writers by the precision and consistency of their arguments. There are Jews and Christians who have come to apply the same standards to Bible. Some, for example, have argued that the chapters of Genesis and Chronicles are factual accounts on history of ancient Israel people. But what we need to the Bible does not present its truths to us in this way. This article presents two main methods to understand the historical contains of the biblical text: historical interpretation and biblical archaeology to know at some profound level the sacred history of biblical Israelites people

Abstract

This article puts emphasis on Daljî, one of traditional Muslim scholars, about his writing ?Ta?lîqât ?alâ Sharh Shaykh Islâm Zakarîyyâ al-Ansârî li Matn Isaghuji?, with philological approach. Such approache has been widely known in Islamic world as tahqîq al-nusûs, which focuses on presenting part of the text readable in different time and context, so it can be used and read in accordance with writer?s intention. What important from Daljî?s contribution in the study of traditional Aristotelian logic (mantiq) is that his defense on this study has firm position, whereas another Sunnî Traditionalist especially the people who was known as Ahl al-hadîth like Ibn Salâh and Ibn Taymîyya considered it as innovation according to the authoritative Islamic teachings. In his ta?lîq, Daljî followed the previous Muslim Scholar in writing logical method that was considerably known amongst its experts. The topics discussed in this study deal with explanations on kulliyât (generals), qadâyâ (prepositions), al-?aks wa al-tanâqud (the contradictions), on qiyâsât (syllogism), on rhetoric and poetics.

Abstract

This article does not take a historical approach to Islamic Jurisprudence per se but rather presents real historical data that reconstructs the application of Islamic laws in Southeast Asia. It highlights significant aspects of how Islamic laws influenced various regions within the area. Scholars agree that Islam, as a major global religion, has become a central identity in the Indonesian Archipelago, among the Malay in the Peninsular region, and within the Chams community in southern Indochina. It has also been a basis for distinct identity in the southern Philippines and the Pattani region. This article examines the historical application of Sharī‘ah law among local inhabitants and its significant role alongside ‘adat laws (customs) among the Muslim Malays and Indonesians. Western influence, starting in the late sixteenth century, contributed to the establishment of a Muhammadan Law court, which evolved into the Sharī‘ah court in the independent states. This article aims to serve as a preliminary study for a comparative history of Southeast Asia, focusing on topics such as the development and reorganization of the Muhammadan Law court.
