Abstract

Tetanus masih merupakan masalah kesehatan masyarakat di negara berkembang karena akses program imunisasi yang buruk serta fasilitas intensive care unit (ICU) yang tidak selalu tersedia. Ada tiga sasaran penatalaksanaan tetanus : (1) membuang sumber tetanospasmin; (2) netralisasi toksin yang tidak terikat; (3) perawatan penunjang (suportif) sampai tetanospasmin yang berikatan dengan jaringan habis dimetabolisme. Sebagian besar kasus membutuhkan 4-6 minggu pengobatan suportif di ICU. Keberhasilan terapi suportif akan menentukan outcome, di samping faktor beratnya penyakit.Tetanus is still an important health issue in developing countries because of poor immunization programme and the poor availability of intensive care unit (ICU) facility. Three goals of tetanus management are: (1) eradication of tetanospasmin source; (2) unbound toxin neutralization; (3) supportive care until tissue-bound tetanospasmin has completely been metabolized. Most cases take 4-6 weeks of supportive care in ICU. The quality of supportive care determine the outcome, in addition the severity of disease.
