Abstract

Peningkatan kadar gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) telah banyak dimanfaatkan dalam praktik klinis terutama pada penyakit hepatobiliaris. Di samping itu, GGT diketahui berperan dalam degradasi gluthatione (GSH) sehingga memicu stres oksidatif, aterogenesis, rupturnya plak ateroma, dan gagal jantung Karena karakteristiknya yang khusus, GGT kemudian diteliti dalam kaitannya dengan penyakit kardiovaskuler. Dari sebagian besar penelitian yang telah dilakukan, GGT tampaknya mampu menjadi biomarker penyakit kardiovaskuler yang menjanjikan, baik untuk hal terapeutik maupun prognostik.Increased gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) level has been widely used as marker in clinical practice, especially in hepatobiliary disease. GGT has also a role in the degradation of glutathione (GSH), which triggers the oxidative stress, atherogenesis, ateroma plaque rupture, and consequently, heart failure. Because of its special characteristics, the role of GGT is widely investigated in cardiovascular disease. Current studies indicated that GGT is a candidate to become a novel and promising biomarker for cardiovascular risk, therapy, and prognosis.
