Abstract

Quality of housing settlement in Bali Province is expressed by local genius of diversity of local community development. The main issue that lead to the change of it, is the factor of population growth both naturally and migration from village to urban.Although many efforts to increase the environment quality of slum settlement, have been conducted by local government, private and community. Yet, many slums area still need to be improved their quality. Those are caused by the lack of finance both provided by government and community. It seems that the community who have strongly local custom and supported by fully together commitment, will be able to increase their quality of housing settlement and environment.Aware of the limited of many sector involved in increasing the environment quality of housing settlement and also realize to the highly local potency of Bali Province, so the approach of community development will be the best option to conduct in order to overcome the growth of slum settlement.

Their knowledge covers both material and spiritual conception that is obtained by learning process, working and praying to compose the output as dharma. All is indeed proposed to harmonious life in a cosmos to attain the prosperity both material and spiritual.The performance of undagi always ensue the process as in the rules, custom, social, ritual and letter that are written on many manuscripts of such palm leaves. Their product is a special and unique that is now facing a hidden crisis from many problems such as how undagi should perform to confront the architecture development in particular the housing development that is becoming complex in global era.At the present, the role of undagi is challenged on a formal education that has a syllabus by clearly direct and education purpose in implementing of teaching-learning process. Nevertheless, undagi is an architect but architect is of course, not undagi. Thus, undagi still has a role in society although their working scope become weighed down because the rapid development of knowledge, technology and art.

Abstract

The settlement pattern of Bali tradition is a local genius which be manifested from philosophy and concept of Hindus community. Geography factor has role in developing the diversity of the pattern settlement typology. This typology is a place to ongoing settle in accordance with the idealism, social culture and society behavior.The Settlement morphology of Bali tradition is evidently a process of change, from the process leading to an adaptation till the process that totally changes from its original form. The process morphology is essentially influenced by both internal and external factors. The main issues are happening at a various level of morphology and its problem is a degradation of physic and non physic values.Nowadays, the morphology shows obviously the rapid movement from the rural tradition settlement pattern towards an urban area. Thus, it seems that we strongly require the integrated and sustainable effort to precisely understanding the issue between tradition and modernization in order to take the right and proper decision.
