Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by bronchial hyperresponsiveness, which often results in shortness of breath. If not managed appropriately, this condition may lead to an increased respiratory rate and decreased oxygen saturation. In addition to pharmacological therapy, breathing exercises such as pursed lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing are commonly used as non-pharmacological interventions to support the management of dyspnea in asthma patients. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of pursed lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing in reducing shortness of breath among asthma patients in the Emergency Department of M.M. Dunda Limboto Hospital. Methods: A case study design was applied involving one asthma patient experiencing dyspnea. The interventions were administered for 5–10 minutes, and respiratory rate and oxygen saturation were measured before and after the intervention. Results: The results showed a reduction in respiratory rate from 28 breaths per minute to 25 breaths per minute, along with an improvement in oxygen saturation from 93% to 95%. Conclusion: These findings indicate that pursed lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing are effective in reducing dyspnea and improving oxygen saturation in patients with asthma.
