Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of students' critical reasoning skills in mathematics learning, particularly in multiplication material. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach on the critical reasoning skills of third-grade students at SDN Kebalen 02. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 52 students divided into an experimental class and a control class. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation. Data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, Independent Samples T-Test, and N-Gain analysis with the assistance of SPSS version 25. The results showed that the average pretest score of the experimental class increased from 33.92 to 54.38 on the posttest, with an N-Gain score of 0.31, categorized as moderate. Meanwhile, the control class increased from 37.12 to 39.85 with an N-Gain score of 0.04, categorized as low. The Independent Samples T-Test showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the RME approach has a significant effect on the critical reasoning skills of third-grade students at SDN Kebalen 02.
