Abstract

This study analyzes the news about conflict between Israel and Palestine in online news media Foxnews.com on May 2021. The characteristics of news from these news media have quite specific characteristics, which is a strong tone, using open visualization, inviting debate, and succeeding in getting thousands of comments from the audience. In this point, even though the news is read by many people, it is also has the potential to exacerbate conflict in the field. This study adopts Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis method which develops analysis from the microstructure, superstructure, and macrostructure levels. The micro structure level looks at the local meaning of the news text from the choice of diction, sentence structure, and rhetoric. Then, the super structure level examines the news scheme, consisting of introduction, content and conclusion. Furthermore, macro structural analysis tries to see the global meaning of news texts by looking at news topics and the surrounding social context. The results of the study show that the Israel and Palestine conflict is not only due to the conflict of one of the group carrying out the attack. But at the same time it was also caused by hard conflict news, there was trauma to the victims in the conflict, as well as the global security conditions still not stable until now.

Abstract

Current studies of data journalism ideally produce knowledge about the use of data as news sources. The problem is that studies in data journalism are still partial; therefore, state of the art of data journalism is not well-known. This study aims to identify and analyze research topics, research methods, and frameworks in data journalism research in 2010-2023. Based on specific criteria, 76 primary studies were selected. This study uses a systematic literature review to analyze and answer the research questions that have been formulated. The results show that data journalism research focuses on topics: practical studies, theoretical studies, politics, education, visualization, storytelling, data journalism and new media, objectivity, sports, innovation, and crime reporting. The research methods are interviews, content analysis, case studies, mixed methods, surveys, ethnography, action research, thematic analysis, discourse analysis, grounded, and experiments. The frameworks identified are the Veglis and Maniou framework, Borges-Rey framework, and Lewis framework. This study concludes the topic of practical studies appears dominant because data journalism is a new phenomenon so its practices are important to research. The interview method is mostly used because it is familiar to researchers from various disciplines. The identification of these three frameworks shows the limited systematic study of data journalism.

Abstract

In the context of conflict, the responsibility to educate the public is not only in the hands of the government but also in the media institutions. Quality and objective media reports significantly contribute to increasing public literacy and knowledge. The problem is that news about conflict in online news media often emphasizes conflict controversy and the sadness of victims, but is incomplete and too short in explaining the conflict events that occurred. This research aims to reveal how the commodification of reporting on the Syrian conflict emerged and developed in online news media. This research data comes from online news published by hürriyet.com.tr as online news media. Data analysis was carried out using thematic analysis within the framework of a media political economy study which looks at the relationship between new media and conflict, the characteristics of news in online news media, as well as the tendency for the commodification of conflict news which can give negative impact on society in the long term. The results of the study show that in reporting on the Syrian conflict, economic interests are more prominent than the application of journalism principles which should be complete, this can be seen from the shortness of the news presented and the conflict that occurred is not presented holistically.
