In this case, the children do not understand the context and make a misunderstanding. The researcher also did a test for implicature. The researcher also did a test for implicature. Based on the test for whole data, the implicature containing cancellability is 1 data, the implicature containing non-detachability 17 data, the implicature containing the calculability 17 data, and the implicature containing non-conventionality is 17 data. There are 17 data that contain non-detachability, calculability, and nonconventionality, and only 1 data that contains cancellability, non-detachability, calculability, and non-conventionality. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and the data source of this research is taken from the “Look away” movie script. In this research, there are many data belonging to type two where the content of type two is that what the speaker said is not understood by the listener, usually causing a misunderstanding discourse. But there are also some data belonging to types one; what is the speaker said is understood by the speaker, types three; what is the speaker’s intention was fully or partially understood by the listener, however, the listener did not work in that way, and types four; what is the speaker’s intention was not been understood by the listeners, however, due to the involvement of other attendants in the communication, the speaker’s expected perlocutionary act came true. This research also has similarities between the four types of perlocutionary acts by Qiang (2013) and perlocutionary act and communication and non-linguistic signs in the perlocutionary act in the book “On Perlocutionary Act” by Qiang (2013).

Abstract

This research aims to discuss Account in The Devil All the Time movie script, based on Scott and Layman’s (1968) theory on the Justification and Excusesaspects. Data was collected through searching, downloading, reading, watching, and coding and the data collected was analyzed through several steps; presenting, describing, interpreting, classifying and concluding the results of this research. The results showed that the account really exists and is applied by the character. The researcher finds several types of accounts, namely justification 5,defeasibility 3, scapegoating 3, and biological 2. One type of account was notfound, namely an accident. In the finding, the researcher finds that every excusecontains justification but every justification does not contain an excuse. Moreover, the justification aspect is more dominantly used because the characteralways justifies bad behavior of others or themselves. In excuses, thedefeasibility aspect is used because many murders are committed on the basis ofvictims who deserve to be killed. The scapegoating aspect is used by thecharacter to accuse others of the mistakes he made so as not to become a suspectof his actions and the biological is the last factor that causes Account’s behaviorin this Movie script.

Abstract

This research discusses the aspects of action and speech that contain in The Invisible Man movie based on the theory of Jespersen and Palmer (2007) in the sub-categories commissive, directive, and volitive. The objective of this research is to describe deontic modality in three sub-categories commissive, directive and volitive in The Invisible Man movie. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data of this research are audio visual as primary data and written utterances from screenshotting and transcribing as secondary data. The data is The Invisible Man movie. Data collection was carried out by searching and downloading movie, watching movie, screenshotting, classifying and coding. Data were analyzed by presenting, describing, interpreting and concluding data to answer research questions from this research. The results show that there are 18 data that are included in the sub-categories commissive, directive, and volitive. Deontic modality appears because it is made by several characters in the movie that make promises and threats (commissive), make requests, order others to do something, give suggestions, carry out obligations (directive), and hope for something (volitive). The researcher found that the characters in The Invisible Man movie adopt deontic modality aspects that focus on the sub-categories commissive, directive, and volitive modality because many scenes show how aspects of the three sub-categories are used by characters in an effort to overcome existing problems. These three sub-categories are related to each other, the existence of a commissive that will lead to the directive to volitive.
