Abstract

Interaction between life structure and notitia, assensus, experientia and fiducia portrays various kinds of believers’ life of faith. This variety suggests the existence of the stages of faith which one should know in order to have a fuller picture of the life of faith. James Fowler’s idea of the stages of faith saw that one believes according to one’s life structure. This idea is helpful to understand the complexity of the life of faith, but it needs to incorporate the perspectives of notitia, assensus, experientia, and fiducia. Projected to suit Fowler’s six stages of faith, there are six stages of notitia (from the absence of notitia to the ontological knowledge), six stages of assensus-experientia (from the absence of assesnsus to the union with God), and six stages of fiducia (from the narcissistic kind to the kenotic level).

Abstract

Previous research has found Internet addiction to be negatively related to emotional intelligence. This study aims to examine the relationship between these two variables in young Christians during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Internet is frequently used for a long duration. This study used a quantitative correlational method through the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire instrument (α = 0.890) based on Goleman's emotional intelligence theory, and the Internet Addiction Test (α = 0.893) based on Young's Internet addiction theory. There were 223 respondents aged 15-24 years (Age = 19.91; SD = 2.929) obtained through convenience sampling, with 62.8% female and 37.2% male. There was no correlation between emotional intelligence and Internet addiction (r = -0.104; Sig. = 0.120), although there was a negative correlation between managing emotions and salience (r = -0.156; Sig. = 0.020), as well as motivating oneself and neglect of duty (r = -0.234; Sig. = 0.000). These findings reinforce the assumption that the increasingly prevalent use of the Internet during the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the phenomenon of human interaction with the Internet, because the Internet is not only a means of coping strategies for negative emotions, but also supports daily activities. The results provide a new perception of the Internet for researchers, parents and coaches in helping young Christians to recognize their emotions so that they do not rely on the Internet when they want to express or suppress them.

Abstract

Marital conflict is the primary reason for marital divorce in Indonesia. A constructive conflict resolution style is required to maintain marital stability and quality. The present research examined the relationship between components of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, managing emotions, motivating oneself, empathy, and social skills) and conflict resolution styles among Christian married couples. The study included 205 respondents from Christian communities across a range of denominations. The results show that all components of emotional intelligence correlated positively with positive problem-solving styles and were inversely related to the conflict engagement style. The conflict withdrawal style was not associated with the managing emotions component but was inversely related to other components of emotional intelligence. The compliance style correlated negatively with the self-awareness component but not with the rest of the components of emotional intelligence. Research discussion focuses on the benefits of emotional intelligence in conflict resolution among married couples. Keywords: emotional intelligence, conflict resolution styles, Christian marriage, marital conflict
