Abstract

Background: Library as information providers needs to expand their collections in order to maintain the novelty of information used by users. The Library Unit of IPDN carries out collection development in the form of print and digital copy every year, but due to the limited space of the library, new collections cannot be displayed and stored back in the warehouse after processing, so that new information takes longer to be obtained by the users even though there are more new printed collections available than the digital ones. Purpose: To find the relationship between the availability of new collections and users’ reading motivation. Method: This study uses quantitative methods with probability sampling technique, namely simple random sampling. The calculation is conducted by using Slovin formula with an error rate of 5% so as to produce 249 respondents. All instruments are declared valid based on the calculation of the Pearson Product Moment formula using a significance value of 5%. It is also declared reliable based on the calculation of the Cronbach Alpha formula. Meanwhile, the correlation test is conducted by using the Spearman-Rank formula. Result: The study shows several findings, such as: a) the new collection has an important value for the users with a score of 0.384 and is in the low proximity level; b) new collection relates to information enlargement. The result shows that it is in the medium proximity level with a value of 0.441; c) the relationship between the use of new collections and the expectations of collection development is in the medium category with a coefficient of 0.428; d) the relationship between the availability of new collections and reading motivation has a coefficient value of 0.513 and has a moderate proximity level. Conclusion: New collections can increase users’ knowledge thus the collections are valuable. When users’ information needs are fulfilled, users will have more expectations towards the collection development of the library. Therefore, the availability of new collections is related to users’ reading motivation. Keywords: Reading Motivation; Collection Development; New Collection

Abstract

Background: The availability of baby boomers, X, millennials, and Gen Z in an organization has become a matter of concern due to the generation gap between these people. This phenomenon can be seen in the Library Unit of IPDN (Institute Government of Home Affairs) as an information provider for students and Academic Community. Purpose: Therefore, this research aimed to describe the information seeking behavior of four generations in IGHA using the Ellis model. Method: It was conducted using a descriptive quantitative method. The population was from the IPDN academic community, totaling 1,776 people, while the sample consisted of 198. Primary and secondary data were obtained from questionnaires and literature, with the instrument developed based on Information Seeking Behavior Model by Ellis. Results: The results showed that all respondents were in an average index (%) of 75% -100%, but those from Gen Z had the highest index (%) for each indicator, namely starting (89%), chaining (90%), browsing (86%), differentiating (90%), monitoring (89%), and extracting (90%). The behavior was in the frequent category and comprised 136, 148, 130, 122, 138, and 142 people in the starting, chaining, browsing, differentiating, monitoring, and extracting groups, respectively. Conclusion: There were differences in information seeking behavior between these four generations. Gen Z is a phydigital and seek unlimited information. Abstract

Background/Problem Statement: The implementation of information services promotion at the IPDN Library Unit has been studied twice, with the result that these activities were in the category of less good and several forms of promotion had not been implemented effectively. The AIDA method can be applied to break down a promotional activity so that an audience can decide to use a service or product. Most of the previous research has discussed promotional activities with commercial products, whereas non-profit organizations also have products whose existence needs to be known to be utilized. Purpose: This research aims to analyze promotional activities at the IPDN Library Unit using the AIDA method. Method: This research uses a descriptive method with a quantitative approach to describe the activities that are the object of research. Data sources were collected from questionnaires, structured interviews, and IPDN Library database report documents. Result: Library users pay more attention to websites and Instagram as library promotional media. Interest in promotional media in the Library is in short video content and events held onsite. Dissemination activities can double the desire to find out more about information services via Instagram @perpustakanipdn. Increased desire motivates action to access information services at the IPDN Library Unit. Conclusion: Based on the discussion, it can be concluded that the details of the AIDA method can be used by non-profit institutions such as the IPDN Library Unit to increase its existence of information services. Hybrid promotional activities can strengthen promotions by increasing the existence of information services as a library product.

Abstract

Social media is often used by people as a place for exchanging information. The applicability of social media can be used as a medium for public services, for example publicity and services of a library. The library of IPDN Jatinangor already has social media, but it has not been used optimally. The publicity is still conducted directly or via instant messengers by an individual. The purpose of writing this article is to contribute to the use of social media as a mean of public relations, especially in the field of libraries. The method used in this article is action research modeled by Kemmis and McTaggart. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques such as documentation, short interviews, and observations. There are also social media that are used, namely Instagram, Facebook and Youtube. This utilization gets positive feedbacks from actual and potential users, as well as wider community. This result is proven by the increase in social media followers of the IPDN Library Unit. The conclusion of this article is that the use of social media as a mean of public relations for libraries can make them be known more widely, facilitate services for users and general public, as well as form a dynamic image for the libraries.
