Abstract

Abstract Psychoanalytic criticism probes deeply into human behavior, uncovering unconscious anxieties, desires, and problems. This study examines Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Gravel Heart (2017) from a psychanalytic perspective, highlighting Salim’s different stages of life and tracing the troubles he encounters. Psychoanalytic theory is applied to the concepts of family and early childhood experiences, as well as defense mechanisms: fear of abandonment, social shame and inferiority, low self-esteem, avoidance, fear of intimacy, and death and loss. The theme of death and loss becomes a hallmark of Salim’s mysterious family, which is full of secrets. Despite Salim’s accomplishments as a teenager, he finds himself occupied by his family conflicts. Later, he accepts his uncle Amir’s invitation to move to the United Kingdom (UK) to attend college. This study found that Salim’s traumatic experiences at an early age influenced his future choices and behaviors, particularly when he moved to the UK and met friends of different races from all over the world, each with their own story, which was definitely varied from his own. Eventually, Salim became overwhelmed by feelings of social inferiority, loss, and failure because he could not change his fate to a more brilliant future. The mysteries he spent his life attempting to solve, ultimately about his father, uncovered that his alienation and isolation was because of the dishonor his mother brought to the family to save her brother, Amir, from jail. However, his father’s story was revealed too late to heal Salim’s past trauma.

Abstract

This study examines the roles of women in society and their attitudes toward family and societal expectations, focusing on Alicia and Theo Faber from Alex Michaelides's The Silent Patient (2019). It explores how Alicia's silence symbolizes the broader silencing of women by men and their search for meaning in chaos. Using a feminist lens, the study analyzes Alicia’s traumatic childhood, revealing how misogyny and patriarchal structures shape her life. It addresses key questions such as how her upbringing under a patriarchal system impacts her and how her perceived insanity becomes an escape from punishment. The study aligns with feminist critics who argue that Western narratives reflect masculine biases and perpetuate patriarchal values. The findings suggest that Alicia’s murder of her husband is a result of the compounded trauma of her childhood and the failure of her parents to protect her, ultimately leading to their tragic end. The study emphasizes the complex relationship between personal trauma and societal oppression, highlighting how these forces shape Alicia’s actions and fate.

Abstract

This study examines specific concepts of the psychoanalytic approach related to dream interpretation and defense mechanisms within Surah Yusuf in the Holy Quran. These concepts are reevaluated from an Islamic perspective, based on the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad. This article aims to discuss the psychoanalytic approach in Surah Yusuf from an Islamic viewpoint and how these concepts can be interpreted in the context of providing solace to Prophet Muhammad during challenging times. Specifically, this research investigates the tumultuous journey of Yusuf, his psychological suffering, and traumatic experiences, as well as how the Quran portrays dream interpretation and defense mechanisms in Surah Yusuf as an example of Prophet Muhammad in endurance and patience during his mission. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of psychoanalytic concepts, particularly dream interpretation and defense mechanisms, within the framework of a realistic and accurate Islamic perspective. The Islamic perspective demonstrates a strong balance between dreams and their interpretation tools, as well as between unconsciousness and defense mechanisms, ultimately fostering security, peace, and the ability to overcome traumatic experiences for individuals who hold firmly to faith and religious principles.
