Abstract

This study aims to investigate the characteristic of a compact generator – hydro turbine system. The generator is of permanent magnet type and the turbine operates in a very low head. The integration of the two components is conducted in such a way that simplifies the construction of the conventional turbine generator. The method is by mounting the generator stator to the turbine casing and the permanent magnets are assembled in the perimeter of the turbine blade rotor. This simple construction is approached by making the stator from individual teeth and yoke. The permanent magnet generator (PMG) is designed to produce the nominal power of 300 Watt 50 Hz at 83 rpm of turbine shaft. All components of the integrated turbine- generator are totally immersed in the water stream. The stator has to be hermitic to avoid water entering the spool. Another issue investigated is the influence of the type of the stator inner casing material to the generator performance. The results show, the PVC material for inner casing has a good influence to the generator performance compared with the mild steel material.

Abstract

This paper proposes a design of a 5 kW, 100 volts brushless direct current (BLDC) motor using an existing stator connected to an inverter and equipped with Hall sensors. The stator is a radial flux motor-type with 54 slots positioned at the outer side of the machine. In this case, the design is focused on the rotor components and winding configuration. However, the inverter aspects are also taken into account. At the same time, it considers the expected outputs: voltage, power, speed; and some limitations: maximum current and flux density. Finite element magnetic-based simulation is performed to extract the magnetic flux distribution, and analytical calculations are then conducted to obtain the output values and characteristics. The results show the BLDC motor at nominal speed produces 5.1 kW output power with 122.34 V voltages, 97.09% efficiency, and torque of 32.82 Nm. The maximum torque and rotation speeds are 51.39 Nm and 4,150 rpm respectively, while the peak-to-peak cogging force is 1.35 Nm. It can be concluded that the BLDC motor has a good performance and is compatible with the connected inverter.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the torque characteristics of outer rotor PMG for low head hydro power application. The aim is to prevent the generator torque from exceeding the turbine torque as the prime mover so that the system can work properly in both start and steady state conditions. The PMG is of outer rotor type and the torques are calculated analytically and numerically. The analysis is focused only on the PMG without connecting it to the turbine. Two analyzed torques include electromagnetic torque and starting torque, which comprises cogging torque, hysteresis torque and friction torque. The electromagnetic torque was obtained by loading the PMG with resistance and impedance (RL-LL in series) respectively. The results indicate that electromagnetic torque is the highest among all the investigated torques although its value is only 5.6% of the turbine torque, and cogging torque is the highest among the starting torque. From those results, it can be concluded that the hydro turbine torque can overcome the generator torque both at start and steady state conditions.
