Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the Bangkalanese legendscape. The method used to analyze the data was the interactive data analysis, which was proposed by Miles and Huberman. From the data analysis, it has been found that there are five types of Bangkalan legends, namely: the origin of the establishment of a region, respectful leaders who died, living his/her sacred grave, mystical places, the spread of Islam, and the origins of the emergence of a culture. It has also been found the distributional of layers of legends existance namely: classics, neoclassic, middle ages, new era, and present layers. Based on the legend interrelations, it has been found four contours of legends, namely the north, west, the south, the east, and the central contours. In addition, this study also reveals two other interesting facts. The first is about the existence of four legends involving Madura strong female characters named Bendoro Gung, Dewi Retnadi, Syarifah Ambami, and Dewi Nawang Wulan. The four women are highly respected by Madurese. This is contradictory to Madurese culture which admires patriarchy (man?s power) very much. The second is about Trunojoyo?s traces. This figure is so well known in Madura yet his footsteps are not so visible in Bangkalan legendscape.

Abstract

Raciolinguistics gained its momentum to grow fast when the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement achieved its popularity in the United States. However, although the number of debates regarding raciolinguistic contributions to minimize racism acts among language experts in the United States has been continuously growing, this condition seems to have no significant impact on Indonesian linguistic study. From the library research, it has been found that even though the language racism issues, whether individual, communal and epistemic, are very common to be found in Indonesia, the attempts to bring raciolinguistics and language racism as a central discourse is so little. Indonesia has a multiracial society which makes this situation susceptible to disintegration without proper racism management. A survey published by the Washington Post newspaper puts Indonesia into the 5 most racist countries in the world and mentions 30-39.9 percent of Indonesia's citizens are racist. This survey is an indicator that racism might become a great issue for Indonesia. Based on this reason this article is presented. The article explains the background of the emergence of raciolinguitics, its development in the US, and the urgency of raciolinguistics to be developed in Indonesia. This article also describes some of the challenges that raciolinguitics might face in their efforts to introduce raciolinguitics in Indonesia.

Abstract

The invention of cellular telephone has brought many changes among the society, especially changes that connect with communication and language aspects. By using a cell phone, people can communicate and use language whenever and wherever they are, whether through call, videocall, MMS or SMS facilities. SMS service, as the most service used by people, is limited by the amount of characters. This limitation then creates a new style of language among the society, which is called as the language style of SMS. Unfortunately, because there is no convention about how to shorten the language in SMS, each person has his/her own way to use and shorten the words in SMS. This language style is very interested to be discussed based on linguistic perspective. This article tries to reveal several language style of SMS.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of elision in the vocabulary of the Bangkalan dialect of Madurese, a feature that reveals both systematic regularities and sporadic irregularities in its phonological structure. The investigation addresses the principles underlying elision that occur in a patterned manner as well as those that emerge unpredictably, thus pointing to deeper complexities in the dialect’s phonetic/phonemic system. The data were elicited from two native speakers of the Bangkalan dialect through structured interviews using an instrument originally designed by Nothofer and later refined by Laksono and Savitri (2009). The recordings were transcribed phonetically to facilitate analysis, after which the forms were closely examined to classify their elision status and taxonomy. The analysis identified seven types of elision-based phonological processes: apheresis, syncope, vowel cluster reduction, initial syllable reduction, apocope, final syllable reduction, and double syllable reduction. Among these, syncope emerges as the most influential, contributing to the proliferation of consonant clusters that distinguish Bangkalan Madurese from other dialects. Furthermore, the three reduction processes, initial, final, and double syllable reduction, play a role in shortening lexical items, thereby shaping a vocabulary that is characteristically more compact than that of other Madurese varieties. These findings underscore the interaction between systematic phonological tendencies and irregular developments, positioning Bangkalan Madurese as a dialect that simultaneously preserves, reshapes, and mystifies the broader landscape of Madurese phonology
