Abstract

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is an intelligent system which has the capability to recognize the character on vehicle number plate. Previous researches implemented ANPR system on personal computer (PC) with high resolution camera and high computational capability. On the other hand, not many researches have been conducted on the design and implementation of ANPR in smartphone platforms which has limited camera resolution and processing speed. In this paper, various steps to optimize ANPR, including pre-processing, segmentation, and optical character recognition (OCR) using artificial neural network (ANN) and template matching, were described. The proposed ANPR algorithm was based on Tesseract and Leptonica libraries. For comparison purpose, the template matching based OCR will be compared to ANN based OCR. Performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated on the developed Malaysian number plates’ image database captured by smartphone’s camera. Results showed that the accuracy and processing time of the proposed algorithm using template matching was 97.5% and 1.13 seconds, respectively. On the other hand, the traditional algorithm using template matching only obtained 83.7% recognition rate with 0.98 second processing time. It shows that our proposed ANPR algorithm improved the recognition rate with negligible additional processing time.

Abstract

The speech enhancement algorithms are utilized to overcome multiple limitation factors in recent applications such as mobile phone and communication channel. The challenges focus on corrupted speech solution between noise reduction and signal distortion. We used a modified Wiener filter and compressive sensing (CS) to investigate and evaluate the improvement of speech quality. This new method adapted noise estimation and Wiener filter gain function in which to increase weight amplitude spectrum and improve mitigation of interested signals. The CS is then applied using the gradient projection for sparse reconstruction (GPSR) technique as a study system to empirically investigate the interactive effects of the corrupted noise and obtain better perceptual improvement aspects to listener fatigue with noiseless reduction conditions. The proposed algorithm shows an enhancement in testing performance evaluation of objective assessment tests outperform compared to other conventional algorithms at various noise type conditions of 0, 5, 10, 15 dB SNRs. Therefore, the proposed algorithm significantly achieved the speech quality improvement and efficiently obtained higher performance resulting in better noise reduction compare to other conventional algorithms.

Abstract

Zakat plays an undeniably significant role in social life. The enforcement of zakah in early Islamic history is evidence that it is a powerful tool for fostering economic growth. The economy under the reign of Caliphate Umar Ibn Abdul Azis even achieved a surplus, with no one having the right to receive zakah. Recent studies have attempted to link the role of zakah and economic growth qualitatively by arguing that zakah can contribute to economic development. However, the extent to which it has a multiplier effect on economic growth has not been examined. Considering this research gap, this study examines such an effect on economic growth, as represented by Gross Domestic Product (GDP). To capture the full impact of zakah on aggregate production, two scenarios are conducted, namely the economy with and without zakah. The simulation results show that zakah can promote aggregate production. On the other hand, the economy experiences lower aggregate production when there is no zakah. An agent-based computational model (ABM) simulation is employed to run the simulation. The application of ABM in this study is intended to introduce the use of computational study as an alternative method of developing research in Islamic economics.

Abstract

This study aims to introduce the application of artificial intelligence in the area of Islamic finance by examining the dynamic changes of gross domestic product (GDP) under fully markup-based financing. The application of artificial intelligence using agent-based computational model (ABM) is employed to conduct the simulation. The simulation result shows that the movement of GDP under markup-based financing which represents Islamic financial system has better performance compared to interest-based lending. In this regard, profit shared to depositors has positive impact on GDP which also proofs that Islamic banking system may promote sustainable economic growth and may create wealth for the whole society. This study proofs that Islamic bank essentially more stable than conventional bank and hence may fights against crisis. This study is potentially the initial work to examine the dynamic changes of economic growth under fully Islamic financial system by applying artificial intelligence concept as its methodology. Thus, this study is expected to contribute to the development of Islamic economics and finance research.
