Abstract

Abstract: Education and schooling involve not only materials to be taught or how they should be taught but also how the teaching and learning are assessed. Studying teachers’ conceptions is important, as it relates to beliefs which influence teaching practices, including assessment. This article reviews several studies on teachers’ conceptions and practices of assessment conducted in six different countries. The objective of the study is to presents teachers’ conceptions of the role of assessment in teaching and learning from different contexts. Data were obtained from a careful review of international articles on the study of teachers’ conception of assessment using inclusion and exclusion criteria. The result of the review reveals that assessment relates to learning improvement and support the use of various strategies and tools in assessing students. However, the six different countries in the review interpret improvement in different ways which is influenced by several factors. Implications and suggestions for further study are also provided. Abstract

Intercultural communication focuses on the importance of understanding other’s language and cultural background in order to create appropriate and effective communication. This article reviews several studies on intercultural competence from five different countries. The objective of this review is to present research from different context, models of intercultural communication developed in those settings and pos­sible adaptive models to develop in Indonesian higher educational settings. Data were obtained from a careful review of international articles on the study of intercultural communication using inclusion and exclusion cri­teria. Result of the review reveals that culture is still the biggest issue that could block effective and relevant communication. For that reason, intercultural communication, (IC) positively contribute to the development of cultural sensitivity and is open for adaptation to work in different context. Suggestions on effective model of intercultural education at university level and applicable sample of collegial relationship among academics are also provided.

Abstract

This research focuses on how to improve students’ English vocabulary mastery using short videos. The subject of the research was Class VII-A SMP Pangudi Luhur Santo Yusup Semarang with a total of 24 students. The research was conducted in semester 2 of the 2022/2023 academic year in two cycles. Data was collected using observation techniques and qualitative and quantitative data collection. In pre-cycle activities, less than 50% of students get satisfactory formative test results, and students tend to be passive during the learning process. In cycle 1, there was a change in student scores, more than 60% of students got satisfactory results, and student-teacher engagement also increased. During cycle 2, 80% of students got satisfactory learning outcomes through changes in formative test scores. It can be concluded that the use of video is beneficial to improve students’ mastery of English vocabulary

Abstract

One of the main goals of improving students’ engagement in speaking class is using certain strategies that are believed to expose a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures. In this case, a teacher could use storytelling to assist students to express ideas more clearly and creatively. However, students of class XI IPA SMA Negeri 5 Kundur academic year 2023-2024 appeared to have low speaking skills. In this class, the level of speaking skill mastery is less than 50%. For this reason, the researchers teach narrative text using storytelling. This is a Classroom Action Research which was conducted in two cycles starting from April to May 2023. The research uses several instruments including observation, questionnaire, practice, and documentation. Data was analyzed quantitatively and the overall result of the research showed an increase in students’ mastery criteria up to 78,85%. This means that the storytelling method in teaching narrative text is effective in improving students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

In this research, word search media was used on the word wall to determine the increase in vocabulary of AL-MADANI SMPT students. English is a language that is used as an international language, so many people learn this language, especially to increase their vocabulary in communicating with each other. This is a class action research which was divided into 2 cycles, where each cycle consisted of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Word search is one of the templates on the word wall to facilitate a more interactive and engaged class. The researchers found that in the first cycle, students’ engagement increased by 65%, while in the second cycle, students' engagement reached 95%. This engagement contributes to students’ achievement progress. This research also helps teachers create creative and innovative media.
