Abstract

Technology makes it easier for us to communicate over a distance. However, there are still many remote areas that find it difficult to communicate. This is due to the fact that communication infrastructure in some areas is expensive to build while the profit will be low. This paper proposes to combine voice over internet protocol (VoIP) over mesh network implemented on openWRT router. The routers are performing mesh functions. We set up a VoIP server on a router and enabled session initiation protocol (SIP) clients on other routers. Therefore, we only need routers as a means of communication. The experiment showed very good results, in the line-of-sight (LOS) condition, they are limited to reception distances up to 145 meters while in the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) condition, they are limited to reception distances up to 55 meters.

Abstract

Topography of a volcano crater can change due to endogenic processes such as deformation or eruption, or surface processes. Erosion and deposition are surface processes that may occur and gradually change the slope of the inner volcano crater. Here, we investigated erosion and deposition processes that occurred in the Kelud crater after the 2014 plinian eruption. We used high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and orthomosaic images derived by drone photogrammetry that acquired between September 2018 and July 2019. We obtained hundreds of aerial images which were reconstructed to obtain 3D models of Kelud’s crater by using Structure from Motion (SfM) technique. Results show erosions at alluvial fans that dominantly located at the east valleys of Kelud crater. The erosion removed the volcanic materials up to -5 m which transported and deposited close to the vicinity of the Kelud crater. The deposition process causes the increase of the Kelud crater lake up to 3 m. Moreover, we also mapped the thermal distribution of the Kelud crater lake by using low cost thermal camera. Our thermal investigation is able to identify some hotspots at the vicinity of the Kelud crater lake with range temperature of 43.7°C – 55.3°C, while the average apparent temperature of the Kelud crater lake is ~ 29°C. This high temperature area may indicate underwater active fractures that continuously release volcanic gasses which leads to convection heat transfer through Kelud’s water lake.

Abstract

A global positioning system (GPS) is often used as a tool for determining direction and positioning. However, GPS is weak in estimating the error, which is quite large at the actual distance, so positioning in a narrow area cannot work well. Therefore, a better method is needed to be used as a narrow-navigation system. This study aimed to determine whether RSSI has a better error than GPS for navigation devices in a narrow space or area. The method used was plotting graphs using Ms. Excel and determining the value of R square. The RSSI value was obtained through the Esp8266 device and then sent to the server via the MQTT protocol and converted using Node-Red on the Raspberry Pi. The comparison results of the Esp8266 device RSSI graph match the Laptop RSSI device as a reference. The match between the relative distance to the RSSI with the actual distance shows a 3.3-33% error. This result is considered much better than the GPS error.

Abstract

The magnetic field is an interesting physical phenomenon and found in everyday life. Many currents technological developments are applications of the magnetic field concept, such as electronics, electric motors, fast trains, and others. In this research, a prototype for measuring magnetic fields was developed with a physics instrumentation system. This prototype can be used for experimental measurements of magnetic fields for physics lecture in the school. It was found that a magnetic field measurement tool could be made using a physics instrumentation system. So, this tool can be used as an experimental medium for measuring the magnitude of the magnetic field in permanent magnet and wires carrying electric current. The prototype was consisted a 49E magnetic sensor. It is hoped that the prototype can replace the Gaussmeter or Teslameter which are relatively expensive. The prototype magnetic field measuring instrument was calibrated by comparing the magnetic field strength measured by the 49E sensor with the Lutron GU-3001 Gaussmeter. Measurements are observed at the centre of the object and parallel to the position of the measuring instrument. The results of the measurements show that the average magnetic field strength on the Gaussmeter and 49E sensor is 246.7 μT and 487.3 μT for permanent magnet and 51.2 μT and 96.9 μT for coiled wires.

Abstract

Population growth causes the demand for food to increase. One solution that can be applied is agriculture with hydroponic technology. To increase production efficiency, one must know the physical parameters that most influence the production process. This research used an IoT system to gather accurate and precise measurement data of physical parameters to be used as a dataset for machine learning. The dataset consisted of light intensity, humidity, air temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDS). Plant growth was measured by leaf area of the plant, number of leaves, and plant stem length every 3 to 4 days. The models used in the machine learning process were linear regression, polynomial regression, and random forest regression. The machine learning results showed that the best model for predicting plant growth was random forest regression with an MAE of 8.3% and an R2 of 0.93, for both bok coy and water spinach. The variables that influence growth the most are TDS and light intensity. According to the relationship between TDS gradient and plant growth gradient, the most optimal growth can be achieved by raising the TDS gradient or by maintaining a high TDS, which can be achieved by adding nutrient solution to the tank regularly.

Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the second most abundant contributor to the greenhouse effect after water vapor. Its atmospheric concentration has continued to rise over the past decade, correlating with the increase in global average temperature. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a technological approach designed to reduce CO₂ emissions by capturing CO₂ from industrial sources, transporting it to designated sites, and storing it securely. Continuous monitoring of CO₂ levels plays a critical role in CCS operations to ensure that stored CO₂ does not leak back into the atmosphere. This study presents a portable, real-time monitoring system for detecting CO₂ leakage using an MG-811 sensor integrated with an Internet of Things (IoT) platform. The system utilizes long-range communication networks for data transmission, enabling real-time visualization and analysis. In contrast to previous research, the proposed system not only displays concentration data but also includes an early warning feature and user-friendly visualization. It is powered by solar energy, allowing autonomous operation in remote areas. The results demonstrate that the sensor responds effectively to variations in gas concentration and environmental parameters. The system provides leakage vulnerability alerts using three categories: SAFE, ALERT, and DANGER. This approach enables faster identification of potential CO₂ leakage, supporting earlier and more effective mitigation actions.

Abstract

Monitoring groundwater levels in peatlands is crucial for mitigating forest and land fires, which frequently occur in tropical regions. Current peatland groundwater level monitoring systems generally have limitations in their sensing range. Additionally, the lack of electricity and internet infrastructure around the monitoring sites presents another challenge. To address these issues, in this study, we developed a groundwater level sensor based on a float integrated with an optocoupler as a rotary encoder to monitor changes in water levels in real-time. The system is connected to an internet of things (IoT) platform through a LoRa communication module, powered by solar panels, enabling continuous wireless data transmission over a large range. To overcome the sensing range limitation, we developed a rotary encoder with a pulley driven by a long rope. Testing was conducted using transparent pipes with varying water levels to evaluate the sensor's performance. Experimental results showed that the sensor could measure water levels with a resolution of ±3.33 mm. This research provides a technique for measuring groundwater levels with an extended measurement range. Additionally, it produces a peatland fire risk monitoring system based on groundwater level parameters. It is expected can support peatland fire mitigation efforts more efficiently and effectively.

Abstract

The gravimetric method is one of the most accurate for determining soil water content (SWC). Several low-cost sensors have been developed to simplify measuring water content in soil by measuring soil moisture. However, the sensor must be calibrated to determine soil moisture parameters accurately. In this research, comparative analysis, and calibration of resistive and capacitive low-cost sensors were carried out. The calibration method for each sensor uses the gravimetric water content (GWC) and volumetric water content (VWC) methods. Measuring changes in SWC using sensors is performed in real time based on internet of things (IoT). Based on the measurements of the capacitive, resistive type 1, and resistive type 2 sensors with three repetitions, the linear regression R2 values were obtained at 0.980, 0.827, and 0.942, respectively. Furthermore, a stability test is carried out to see how stable the sensor is when making measurements over a long period. The result is that the capacitive, resistive type 1, and resistive type 2 sensors have errors 1.971×10-4, 7.001×10-4, and 6.270×10-4. Based on the results obtained, capacitive sensors have the highest level of accuracy and stability. Furthermore, capacitive sensors are applied to IoT-based agriculture with long range (LoRa) as communication data.
