Carool Kersten. 2015. Islam in Indonesia: The Contest for Society, Ideas and Values, London: Hurst & Company, pp. 373+xx.Comprehensive studies of contemporary Indonesian Islam are still scarce. Most of the studies on this subject deal with certain aspects of current developments in Indonesian Islam. Kersten’s book is an attempt to present an intellectual history of contemporary Indonesian Islam in six chapters: first, secularism, pluralism and liberalism in Indonesia; second, Islam in Indonesia today: discourses and interlocutors; third, the weight of predecessors: adaptations, critique, and transformation; fourth, debating secularism: Islam, statehood and democracy; fifth, the letter or the spirit of Islamic law?: legal formalists versus substantivitst; sixth, contentious triangulation: religious pluralism, human rights and freedom of thought. This book can be considered as a sequel to the Indonesian part of the book written by the same author, Cosmopolitans and Heretics: New Muslim Intellectuals and the Study of Islam (2011).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i1.2905

What is meant by the term Research University? Essentially, a Research university is a university based upon a research tradition. The implications are broad, being that the university must have the capabilities and facilities to support the strengthening of this research tradition. In realizing these aspirations, there is a need to identify how prepared the university is to begin developments in the areas of academic, financial and administrative, institutional, and student affairs. The involvement of the ulama of the Indian Ocean region took at least two forms. Firstly, through their travelling or migrating to the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina (the Haramayn). The author found that a great number of ulama and students from the Indian Ocean region came to and later settled in the Holy Cities to study and teach. Secondly, students who felt that they possessed sufficient knowledge returned to their place of origin in the Indian Ocean region, teaching and forming networks of ulama and students in their own area. As a consequence, through these two methods, there appeared a complex criss-crossing of networks of ulama in the Indian Ocean region and other areas of the Muslim world.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v8i2.689

William Liddl, and Kuskridho Ambardi. 2018. Voting Behavior in Indonesia since Democratization: Critical Democrats. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.This article aims to review two books written by four foremost scholars in the field of political science. In the context of understanding Islam and the culture of democracy, these two books can answer questions that are often discussed, that is the relationship between religious piety and political behavior in Indonesia. Quantitatively, 99.7% of total Muslims in Indonesia state that religion is an important element in their lives. However, in terms of political preferences, this fact does not have implications for the votes obtained by Islamic-based political parties, especially in the post-Soeharto elections. They, instead of carrying out their own candidates, tend to be supporters in the presidential election and local leaders elections. To figure out this puzzle, these books are very pivotal works to understand the relationship between Islamic piety and politics. Both of these books show that there has been an increase in the level of piety of the Indonesian Muslims in the past two or three decades. However, creating piety does not affect their political behavior - specifically their voting behavior in elections.

As stated by Abdurrahman Wahid in his introduction, the book under discussion is the first one written in English, not in the Indonesian language, that discusses the Nahdatul Ulama (NU).
