Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) systems can be connected to the utility grid to ensure the reliability and continuity of the electrical energy supply. Although the output of the PV modules and many electrical loads are direct current (DC), most grid connected PV systems use alternating current (AC) grid through the inverter. This study presents an analysis of DC microgrid PV system connected to PLN utility grid using controlled rectifier. The controlled rectifier circuit uses a thyristor which can be controlled at its ignition angle to regulate the output voltage and current supplied from utility. The proposed PV system configuration simulations are performed using PSIM software. The system supplies resistive loads in the form of DC lights. Simulations are carried out with variations in load resistance and the thytistor ignition angle. The simulation results show the rectifier circuit has a voltage ripple of 1.57 V (6.47%). While the efficiency of the system under various loading conditions and ignition angle varies between 95.08%–97.72%. The highest system efficiency is obtained under high thyristor ignition conditions.

Abstract

In a single-phase inverter system, parallel operation of inverters is a strategy to increase capacity, improve reliability, and increase the flexibility of the inverter system. This work discusses the basic operation of a novel parallel H-bridge current source inverter (H-BCSI) and H-bridge voltage source inverter (H-BVSI) operated in a grid-connected operation with isolated direct current (DC) sources equipped with power transformers. Each inverter circuit employed an independent current controller to regulate its alternating current (AC) output current. The proposed inverter system was tested for different operation conditions, and its characteristics were analyzed, especially for its harmonic profile. The test results showed that if the magnitude of the H-BCSI current was varied, while the H-BVSI current was kept constant, the total harmonic distortion (THD) value of load current was much lower than the THD values of H-BVSI current, H-BCSI current, and grid current, i.e., THD Iload ≤ 1%. This condition also occurred when the output current of the H-BVSI was increased gradually while the output current of H-BCSI was maintained constant. Moreover, a similar result was also obtained when both inverters’ output currents were varied simultaneously with the same value. The test results confirmed that the injected AC current of both inverters during parallel grid-connected operation worked well at unity power factor, and met the standards IEEE 1547 and IEC 61727, of which current THDs were ≤ 5%. The proposed grid-connected parallel inverter system worked, supplying a sinusoidal AC load current with high power quality.

Abstract

Research and development on power converters are getting more interesting in recent years. It is also buttressed by rapid development in related fields, such as power semiconductor, digital advanced control, magnetic material and use of power converters in many sectors.  In addition to the power quality matter, simplicity of inverter circuits is another notable aspect that should be considered toward economical feature. Adding the quantity of power switches will increase complexity of overall inverter circuits. This paper discusses a circuit configuration of three-level modified sine wave neutral point shorted power inverter which work converting dc power into ac power with less number of power switches. To improve the performance and feature of inverter circuits, the inverter was equipped with online temperature monitoring, and overheat protection based on internet of things. Adding online temperature monitoring system makes easier in monitoring of circuits to prevent the excessive faults of inverter. Some computer based test data are shown and discussed. Furthermore, experiment results of the inverter prototype, and its online monitoring system are presented. Test outputs demonstrated that the proposed system worked properly generating a three-level modified sine wave voltage, with online temperature monitoring system.

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel internet of things (IoT)-based control system for energy management to reduce electricity consumption from the two most dominant loads in buildings: air conditioners (AC) and lighting. The proposed system provides a comprehensive operational control strategy that integrates scheduling, human detection, ambient temperature, and light intensity for optimal room-level energy management employed. The proposed system employs wireless fidelity (WiFi)-enabled temperature, presence, and light sensors for comprehensive room conditions monitoring. Additionally, a WiFi-connected infrared module serves as an actuator to regulate the AC unit. Testing results demonstrate compelling energy savings, achieving up to 36% for the AC and 72% for the lighting while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment. These results were obtained from an experimental test in a private room within a residence over an 8-hour daytime period with 50% occupancy time. The proposed IoT system offers a highly effective and easily deployable solution for sustainable energy reduction in residential settings.
