Abstract

Multilevel inverters are emerging as the new breed of power converter options for high power applications. They typically synthesis the staircase voltage waveform (from several dc sources) which reduced harmonic content. This paper presents a simple selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation for single-phase cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter. The optimum switching angle of the transcendental equations describing the fundamental and harmonic components is solved by means of the Newton-Raphson (NR) method. The proposed SHE scheme is performed through simulation using MATLAB/Simulink. This simulation results are then verified through experiment using Altera DE0-Nano field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed SHE is efficient in eliminating the lowest-order harmonics and producing a higher quality output waveform with a better harmonic profile.

Abstract

Multilevel inverters are gaining special interest among researchers and in the industry due to their widespread applications and numerous merits. Obtaining high quality, more reliable output while using a reduced number of electronic components is the main purpose of most of the research conducted in this area of study. The purpose of this study is to apply the nearest level control (NLC) method to a 13-level transistor-clamped H-bridge (TCHB) inverter with unequal DC voltage supplies. The NLC method operates at the fundamental frequency, thus reducing switching losses, and can reduce the harmonic content significantly. The adopted multilevel inverter consists of two TCHB cells supplied with two asymmetrical DC input sources with a voltage ratio of 1:2. This structure reduces the number of electronic components, and the asymmetry in the DC input voltages results in a higher number of levels. The adopted topology and its proposed control method were simulated in Matlab/Simulink, and the simulation results were verified through experiments using an Altera field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board. The results showed that the topology and its control method are efficient in obtaining a high-quality output with an improved total harmonic distortion (THD).

Abstract

Recently, global research is giving more attention to the renewable energy sources due to its sustainability and environmentally friendly nature. The necessity of DC to AC conversion to integrate these sources to the well established AC power system create a significant development of multi-level inverter with its advantages of operating at higher rating system with lower component rating as well as better harmonics performance at it output voltage and current. In this research paper, a modified topology of CHB-MLI to provide 13-level output AC waveform is proposed based on the SHE-PWM strategy using the ANN optimization technique. The system modeling is done with Matlab Simulink software and verification are carried out by both simulation and experiment. Results show that the ANN technique able to reduce the THD significantly as the level of waveform is increased as low as 5.16% THD for the 13-level output voltage. Results from the experiment shows a good agreement with the simulation, thus verifying the effectiveness of the proposed ANN technique as an optimization method.

Abstract

In this work, a three-phase of multilevel inverter (MLI) with reduced number of switches components based on Newton Raphson (NR) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) techniques were presented. The Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse-Width Modulation (SHE-PWM) is a powerful technique for harmonic minimization in multilevel inverter within allowable limits. NR and PSO techniques were used to determine the switching angles by solving the non-linear equation's analysis of the output voltage waveform of the modified CHB-MLI in order to control the fundamental component. A comparison has been made between NR and PSO techniques related to optimization in order minimize harmonic distortion. The main aims of this paper cover design, modeling, construction the modified topology of the CHB-MLI for a three phase five levels inverter. The controllers based on NR and PSO were applied to the modified multilevel inverter. The inverter offers much less THD using PSO scheme compared with the NR scheme. The performance of the proposed controllers based on NR and PSO techniques done by using MATLAB/Simulink of results are compared.

Abstract

This paper proposes a nearest level control method based modulation scheme for a 9-level symmetrical Transistor Clamped H-bridge (TCHB) inverter. The topology has gained increasing research focus due to its advantages in obtaining high quality output while using a reduced number of electronic components. The device count for obtaining a 9-level output voltage is it uses 10 active switches as compared to the 16 being used in a conventional 9-level cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) inverter. The significant contribution of the research is the development of the NLC modulation technique that operates at the fundamental frequency, thus reducing switching losses, and able to reduce harmonic content significantly. The reduced harmonic content can lessen the power quality problem. The NLC modulation scheme, shows that the overall THD is reduced without the need for filtration. The 50 values of harmonic content will be count that follows the IEEE Standard 519. MATLAB/Simulink based simulations and experimental results obtained from the laboratory prototype of a single-phase TCHB inverter feeding a R load validate the theoretical analyses and effectiveness of the proposed modulation scheme.

Abstract

This paper confers an investigation of a selective harmonic elimination (SHE) technique has gained wide acceptance for many AC drive applications, due to a higher DC bus voltage utilization (higher output voltage compared with the sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM), lower harmonic distortions and easy digital realization.” In recent years, the SHE technique was extensively adopted in multilevel inverters since it offers greater numbers of switching for obtaining further improvements of AC drive performances. “Nevertheless, the use of SHE-associated multilevel inverters will optimize the switching angles based on artificial neural networks (ANN) compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the modified CHB-MLI output voltage within permissible limits. The main objectives of this paper are the design and testing of the CHB-MLI modified topology laboratory for a nine-level single-phase prototype.” Also demonstrated were the experimental effects of using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) TMS320F2812 into a prototype. The controls were applied to the modified multilevel inverter, based on ANN and PSO. The proposed controller was then coded onto a board of DSP TMS320F2812. Compared with the PSO method, the inverter gives fewer THD using ANN scheme.

Abstract

In converters or multilevel inverters it is very important to ensure that the output of the multilevel inverters waveforms in term of the voltage or current of the waveforms is smooth and without distortion. The artificial neural network (ANN) technique to obtaining proper switching angles sequences for a uniform step asymmetrical modified multilevel inverter by eliminating specified higher-order harmonics while maintaining the required fundamental voltage and current waveform. However, through this paper a modified CHB-MLI are proposed using artificial intelligence optimization technique based on modulation selective harmonic elimination (SHE-PWM). A most powerful modulation technique that used to minimize a harmonic contants during the outout waveform of multilevel inverter is a SHE-PWM method. The proposed a five-level modified cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (M-CHBMI) with ANN controller to improve the output voltage and current performance and achieve a lower total harmonic distortion (THD). The main aims of this paper cover design, modeling, prediction for real-time generation of optimal switching angles in a single-phase topology of modified five level CHB-MLI. due to the heavy cost of computation to solving transcendental nonlinear equations with specified number, a real-time application of selective harmonic elimination-pulse width modulation (SHE-PWM) technique is limited. SHE equations known as a transcendental nonlinear equation that contain trigonometric functions. The prototype of a 5-level inverter in digital signal processing (DSP) TMS320F2812 reveals that the proposed method is highly efficient for harmonic reduction in modified multilevel inverter.

Abstract

Total harmonic distortion (THD) is a key index used to measure the quality of output waveforms in multilevel inverters. In this paper the THD is investigated and compared between two modulation methods; selective harmonic elimination and nearest level control, for 13-level transistor clamped H-bridge (TCHB) inverter. The selected TCHB topology employs a reduced number of DC sources and switches compared with other conventional multilevel inverters, which helps to reduce the size and cost of the inverter. The performance of both modulation methods has been validated through simulations using MATLAB/Simulink. The results show that for selective harmonic elimination, the 13-level output exists for a narrow range of modulation index, M (0.687≤M≤0.694),while for nearest level control method, the 13-level output exists for a wider range of M (M≥0.917), which means the 13-level output exists for different ranges of  for both methods. The THD obtained from both methods fulfills the IEEE Std 519-2014 standard of harmonics.
