Abstract

Responding to questions is an important skill to develop.Sometimes students cannot give suitable responses to somespecific questions. In order to be able to give suitable response to a question students have to understand what a given questionexpects. Failing to anticipate what the question asks will lead thestudents to give unsuitable response. Giving feedback to thestudents in anticipating what a question asks is believed to be able to improve their abilities to respond to the questions appropriately. I conducted classroom research on the teacher’s feedback to improve the students’ question-response skill in my listening class in EFL setting. Sixty-nine participants were the fourthsemester students taking Listening IV in 2005. They were asked to listen to and answer the recorded oral questions taken from a standardized model test. The test results were evaluated and the researcher gave feedback to the students by giving the key and discussing the case specific to each question item. After giving teacher’s feedback, the participants were asked to listen and respond to a number of questions and the result, again, wereevaluated. This cycles were iterated for 3 times. The teacher’sfeedback comprises sound recognition, guessing the word’s orphrase’s meaning, and grammar. The research findings showed significant improvement on the students’ question-response skill indicated by the increased mean score especially after implementing the third cycle. Keywords: feedback, action research, cycles, sound recognition, meaning, grammar

Abstract

This study is a linguistic analysis on literary works, especially of poem. It is mainly based on the study of cohesion given by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The study intends to describe how the cohesion works in two poems ‘Marks’ and ‘the way and the way things are’ written respectively by Linda Pastan and Nila Northsun. This is in line with Halliday and Hasan (1974:328) that a “linguistic study of literature is not an interpretation of what the text means; it is an explanation of why and how it means what it does.” The cohesive devices realized in the poems were identified and the cohesive ties among them were, then, described to show why and how the two poems mean what they do.Keywords: poem, cohesion, cohesive devices, and cohesive ties

Abstract

Indonesia lies between Asia and Australia continents. It hasapproximately 17,508 islands that make it one of the largest archipelagos in the world spanned from Sabang (in Aceh, Sumatra Island) to Merauke (in Papua Island). The considerable number of its islands is inhabited by numerous ethnic groups that also bring about various cultural arts. Indonesia is famous for its multiculturalism as well. This paper tries to investigate the perspectives of landscape of nature through the languageexpressions in various Indonesian folktales by using the structuralapproach. It is an attempt to disclose the visual imageries reflected in the folktales to know the varieties of Indonesian cultures. The data were taken from several folktales owned by some ethnic groups in Indonesia which were anonymously created and told from generation to generation. The findings showed the variety of unique visions and perspectives about landscape among the ethnic groups reflected through the imageries in the language of each folktale. Keywords: ethnic group, folktale, Indonesia, landscape, language, multiculturalism,

Abstract

It is believed that the students’ habit of listening correlate with their listening proficiency. This study tried to investigate this view. The learners’ ability in listening to the spoken language is indicated by their ability to give response or comment to the spoken language that they have listened. The research was conducted in EFL class setting. Thirty five of the seventy nine students were taken as the subjects of the research. The research subjects were the fourth students of English Department Dian Nuswantoro University taking “Listening Comprehension IV”. They were asked to answer the questionnaires to measure their habit. The student’s scores in “Listening Comprehension IV” weredocumented and used as their proficiency level. The two variables were then analyzed by using Pearson Product-Moment test. The output of the statistical analysis showed that the two variables have significant correlation indicated by 70.4% coefficient correlation and the level of significance was 0.0. The results of the statistical analysis indicate that the better the students’ habit of listening the better their listening proficiency. Based on the findings, the teacher of English is recommended to shape the students’ habit by giving much task in order to expose them toEnglish especially spoken English.Key words: Listening, Pearson Product-Moment test, Spoken English, Students’ability,

Abstract

It is not an easy task for language students to write creatively. The students usually have insufficient knowledge of what they have to write. In respond to this gap this paper shows how genre and inter-textuality- based approach was implemented to develop the students’ creative writing ability through a series of writing assignment. The research participants included 20 students taking ‘Advanced Genre-Based writing” course in 2010/2011 academic year. The data were obtained from the students’ writings and classroom observations. The finding showed that teaching writing using genre and intertextuality approach could enhance the students’ creative writing. This evidence could be identified through students’ improvements in their  writings’ assignments. Another finding revealed that the approach could enhance the students’ motivation to express themselves through pieces of  writings. Based on the findings, the presenters argue that the introduction of genre and inter-textuality to creative writing programs is an important issue that writing teachers should take into account. Keywords: creative writing, genre, intertextuality, students’writings, students’ motivation

Abstract

This paper discusses Amir’s anxiety and motive in Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner". The library research method was applied in this research. In analyzing the data, the structural approach was used to scrutinize the intrinsic elements such as character, conflict, setting, and plot, while the psychological approach was used to examine extrinsic elements such as anxiety and motive of Amir as the main character in “The Kite Runner”. The results show that Amir, as the main character, is a caring, inferior, coward, optimistic, anxious, selfish, careless, sly, and patient person. It also indicates that Amir is a round static character since he has complex traits but his character as a caring person remains the same from the beginning to the end of the story. Besides, as the main character, Amir experienced both internal and external conflicts. The settings of time, social, and place showed the period in Afghanistan between 1975 and 2001 and the social stratum, Pashtun and Hazara in Kabul.  Dealing with the plot, it starts from Amir’s effort to get Baba’s recognition and respect, Amir’s anxiety after betraying Hassan, Amir efforts to take Sohrab out from Kabul, the liberation of Sohrab from Assef, the Sohrab suicide trial, up to Amir’s effort to get back Sohrab trust. Also, Amir’s anxiety deals with realistic, neurotic, and moral anxiety, while the motives are safety and security need, belongingness and love need, and self-esteem needs.

Abstract

This article discusses 'The North Ship', a poem written by Philip Larkin. The poem was examined by using stylistic approachproposed by Leech and Short. Stylistic study is a field of empiricalenquiry in that linguistic theories are used to analyze literary text(Leech and Short; 1994 and 1996). Considering that stylistics deals with a very broad area, this study is limited in two aspects namely foregrounding and cohesion. The whole lines of 'The North Ship' were examined line by line to find out foregrounding techniques used by its writer. Any linguistic features such as diction were classified. Likewise, the poetic features of the poem were identified. Both linguistic and poetic features were then analyzed and described based on the given theory. In addition, the cohesive devices in the poem were identified and traced. They were described one by one based on the classification given in Halliday and Hasan Model. The ties among them were described and showed in the cohesive links and chains Based on the analysis of foregrounding and cohesion, the interpretation of the poem was finally made. The findings showed that foregrounding and cohesion are very supportive each other in creating meaning of the examined poem. Keywords: cohesive devices, deviation, foregrounding, , parallelism, stylistics,
