Abstract

This paper presents an adaptive fault identification algorithm bases on wavelet packet transform (WPT) for two-terminal power transmission lines. The proposed scheme performs four functions which are the fault detection, fault classification, distinguishing among the temporary and the permanent faults, and detection of the arc extinguish instant. The presented algorithm only uses the measured current at one terminal reducing the required cost. Also, it can mitigate the error resulting from the load variations via updating the presetting value. Consequently, it does not need retesting under changing the transmission system configurations. The proposed scheme is deduced in the spectral domain and depended on the application of the WPT. The db6 wavelet packet is used for decomposing the faulty phase current waveform (level 7) to get the energy coefficients. The presented algorithm is assessed under various fault conditions such as fault distances, inception angles, and faults nature via simulating different secondary arc models via using ATP/EMTP. The obtained results are investigated and evaluated.

Abstract

Due to the great level of wind energy penetration in the existing network, huge efforts have been directed to enhance the grid-connected wind generator performance. This paper shows an application of a hybrid algorithm of the particle swarm optimization and the gravitational search algorithm (PSO-GSA) to enhance the transient stability of the grid-tied wind energy conversion system. The variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) direct-drive permanent-magnet synchronous generator is connected to the network through a full-scale converter. The generator- and grid-side converters are controlled by utilizing an optimum proportional-integral (PI) controller. The criterion of the integral squared error is utilized as an objective function. The PSO-GSA based-PI controller efficacy is validated by comparing its results with that are obtained by utilizing the genetic algorithm (GA)-based-PI controller. The performance of the suggested control scheme is checked during various fault conditions. The control scheme quality is legalized by the simulation results that are obtained using MATLAB/Simulink program

Abstract

This study discusses how to enhance the power distribution system and one of the most important ways to do that is by reconfiguration of the power system. Reconfiguration means changing the topology of the radial distribution network by changing the status of switches. The objective is to minimize the total power loss and enhance the voltage profile. Many optimization techniques were used to solve this problem such as classical optimization which is proven to be time consuming method and heuristic methods which are more efficient in our problem here. In this paper, the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) which is one of the modern heuristic optimization techniques and it has high efficiency to solve discrete optimization problems, is used to get the optimum case in reconfiguration problem. WOA is applied to (33 bus system, 69 bus system, and 118 bus system) and results are compared to other heuristic methods.
