Abstract

The study aims to seek the difference of language abilities between male and female young learners. The previous studies have already given plenty of proofs that there are some boundaries between male and female Language learners in achieving language ability. However, there are only few studies looking for gender difference of language ability in younger L2 learners. The present study used two young learners as the participants and the data is collected only in spoken language. Therefore, the data analysis only focused on the verbal ability and the use of linguistic device. The study found that male learner was more fluent in speaking L2 than the female one. He produced more words and used more in sentence conjunction than the female learner did. He also talked smother and more detail than the female leaner. However, both learners were equal in using intensifier. To be concluded, though many studies stated that female learners master L2 quicker than male learner, it might be different when it comes to the younger level L2 learners. Here, both male and female learners had balance level of ability of L2 learning. Keywords: gender difference, young L2 learner, language ability

Abstract

The present study aims to seek the stages of how young learners forming their questions. It is believed that in making the questions, learners are going trough several developments until they can create the question perfectly. Stages from Pienemann, Johnston & Brindley (1988) were used as the developmental classification of question formation. While Richards’ (1973) Errors stages were used in analyzing the errors of question formation. Two students with different genders were taken as the participants with narration manuscripts as the data collection. The results were very surprising; both learners could perform complex question formations with only few errors. Though they are young learners, structuring a complex question seemed not difficult for them. However, the more difficult the question formats, the more errors the students made. They students commonly simplified the questions format, which made the formats sometimes, went wrong. From this interesting result, It is expected that this study can be an initial effort to conduct bigger and wider area of research in the future.

Abstract

Being a fan is another way of gaining an identity, and the fans' identity can be analyzed from the linguistic features used in fan talks. The present study aims to identify any identities detected from the fans’ linguistic repertoires when admiring their idols. This qualitative study is conducted by collecting the fan talks in Justin Bieber fan groups on Instagram. The use of social media promotes the increasing number of fans and encourages them to declare their affection textually. The obtained data is analyzed based on three elements of linguistic units; words, themes, and concepts. After obtaining the analysis from the elements of units, the study then shapes the relevant categories constructing the fans’ identities. The result reveals that those fans are identified with sisterhoods, sympathy, and support, for their idol, Justin Bieber, and for each other. Those natures of being fans eventually compose them into dedicated and intimate fans. Furthermore, those fans are also excellent at expressing sympathy and jokes using translingual practice.  Translingual practice is also attached in the talks as those fan use varieties of English, Bahasa Indonesia, and heritage languages.
