Abstract

Licensure examination for teachers (LET) is the major requirement of teachers in the Philippines before practicing teaching profession. As such, it is imperative to monitor necessary parameters to increase passing percentage of teachers in LET. This study attempted to examine the relationship between performance in pre-LET and LET of 71 elementary education (BEEd) and 127 secondary education (BSEd) graduates in one university in the Philippines. Individual and aggregated data were secured from the college of teacher education dean’s office and Professional regulations commission (PRC). Using the descriptive-correlation method of research, this study presented the null hypothesis that pre-licensure is not a predictor of LET results. Findings showed that there is a notable relationship between the pre-LET and LET examination performances. Using linear regression analysis, ratings attained by the graduates in pre-LET can predict the performance in LET with higher level of confidence. The study confirmed that for general education (GenEd) and professional education components of licensure examination for BEEd, the pre-LET scores of education graduates are significant predictors.

Abstract

Every higher education institution (HEI) needs to monitor the employability status of its graduates as this reflects the quality education that HEIs provide to their students. In this study, a retrospective approach was used to analyze the employment status of graduates of a state university in the Philippines from 2015 to 2019. A data mining procedure was adopted to obtain necessary data and analysis. It was hypothesized in the study that the employment rates are the same across programs per year. Also, the employment rates from 2015 to 2019 are the same as the targeted employment rate in the strategic plan of the university. Statistical treatments such as mean, median, and standard deviation, Shapiro-Wilk test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the hypothesis. Results show that the employment rate of graduates of 2015-2019 is in the high-level category and significantly higher than the targeted employment rate in the university strategic plan. Similarly, findings show significant differences in the employability rates of graduates considering the programs they enrolled in. On the contrary, no significant difference in the employment rate of graduates per year graduated. The study concluded that the university is consistent in producing employable graduates.

Abstract

Higher academic performance during the senior high school program and passing marks in the qualifying examination are the two major requirements before an aspirant tertiary student is admitted to a teacher education program. However, questions have been raised on the performance of teacher education graduates in the Licensure examination, which in the past decade, obtained a low national passing percentage. Given the scenario, is the entry-level requirement sufficient, or does it need further enhancement? This study correlates the academic performance during high school of 273 aspirant education students with their qualifying examination scores. A descriptive–correlational design was used. Results show that aspirant students’ academic performance during senior high school is in outstanding level. However, it does not match their entrance examination results in the three main components of the examination for teacher education students, namely: general education, professional education, and major field of specialization. For this reason, it is concluded that obtaining high academic records during high school does not guarantee obtaining a high entrance examination rating. Finally, several recommendations are offered after the conduct of the study.
