Abstract

From History to Hadith Studies: Understanding Critical Historical Methods and Dating Hadith in the WestThis article describes the historical research method implemented by hadith scholars in the West. Since Ignaz Goldziher developed Aloys Sprenger’s idea, scholars of hadith in the West have always based their studies on critical historical methods to formulate various methods of dating hadith as a source of historical reconstruction in the early periods of Islamic development. The reality of hadith studies in the West based on research methodology in the historical discipline has not yet received the attention of Muslim scholars, not least in Indonesia, which provides a critical review of the results of studies in the West. Instead of proposing a critique from a compatible paradigm, the arguments put forward are often based on assumptions that originate in the tradition of traditional hadith criticism. This article examines literature sources using a qualitative method and a narrative approach. Starting from the description of the formation and development of historical science in Europe, this article shows how the historical method was used by scholars of Islamic studies in the West to formulate four types of methods of dating hadith. The application of one or more of these methods in the study of hadith involves considering its suitability with the sources' characteristics. However, Muslim scholars’ involvement in the discourse of hadith studies in the West undoubtedly departs from the paradigm, theory, and method of historical research

Abstract

This paper describes the criticism of Yusuf al-Qaradawi to the phenomenon of mistaken hadith quoting done usually by Muslim preachers. Although there is a controversy among the scholars of hadith about the use of weak hadths in terms of religious commands and prohibitons, al-Qaradawi considers it important for the Muslim preachers to equip themselves with knowledge of the issues summarized in the science of hadith, such as takhrij al-hadith and rijal al-hadith. This is recommended for the Muslim preachers to be careful of using weak hadiths denied because it contained falsehood. Yusuf al-Qaradawi offerred three additional requirements necessary for the preachers in this context. However, he rejected ethical recommendations for the preachers to quote weak hadiths either in sanad (chain of transmitters) or matn (the content of hadiths)

Abstract

This article discusses Muslim communities in the coastal area of Palu Bay in the late eighteenth century. Historiographical sources from scholars and historians regarding Islam in this region generally state that the teachings of this religion were first disseminated in the early seventeenth century thanks to the role of the Minangkabau cleric, Abdullah Raqie, or known as Datokarama. However, from the Datokarama period to the nineteenth century, Islamic historiography appears to be inadequate due to limited access to primary sources dating from the same period as the events studied and the tendency to oral traditions that require critical formulation. This article uses historical methods to reconstruct the Muslim community in the coastal area of Palu Bay based on records from European sailors who had lived in Sulawesi and made voyages through maritime routes connecting the islands in northern Kalimantan to Papua. Apart from showing characteristics of the local Muslim community during this period, the article shows that the role of Ismail Tuan Haji as the highest imam for the community and the king's authority in Donggala is an indication of the network of spreading Islam in this region connected to the Sultanate of Sulu and Mindanao. Simultaneously, the network confirmed the route navigation map to the East from the Ming Dynasty, dating back to the early fifteenth century.
