Abstract

This paper proposes Firefly Algorithm (FA) with fuzzy approach for solving combined economic-emission load dispatch (CEELD) problem in power generation. The main objective of the CEELD problem is to determine the optimal cost and emission level of power generation and fulfill the load demand and operational constraints. The CEELD problem used weighted sum method to combine two objective functions (cost and emission) into single objective. Then, the Fuzzy-based mechanism approach is integrated in FA to find the best compromise solution for both conflicting cost and emission level. The FA has been tested on IEEE 118-bus 14-unit test system for minimization both cost of power generation and emission level. The performance of FA for solving CEELD problem has been investigated in terms of optimal solution, convergence characteristics and Pareto front solution. From the comparison of the CEELD solutions, it found that FA can provide significant cost and emission reduction compared to other methods. Thus, it can be used as alternative approach for solving any optimization problems.

Abstract

Non-convex Optimal Economic Dispatch (OED) problem is a complex optimization problem in power system operation that must be optimized economically to meet the power demand and system constraints. The non-convex OED is due to the generator characteristic such as prohibited operation zones, valve point effects (VPE) or multiple fuel options. This paper proposes a Gbest Artificial Bee Colony (GABC) algorithm based on global best particle (gbest) guided of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) in Artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm for solving non-convex OED with VPE. In order to investigate the effectiveness and performance of GABC algorithm, the IEEE 14-bus 5 unit generators and IEEE 30-bus 6 unit generators test systems are considered. The comparison of optimal solution, convergence characteristic and robustness are also highlighted to reveal the advantages of GABC. Moreover, the optimal results obtained by proposed GABC are compared with other reported results of meta-heuristic algorithms. It found that the GABC capable to obtain lowest cost as compared to others. Thus, it has great potential to be implemented in  different types of power system optimization problem.

Abstract

Daylight harvesting systems (DHS) offer the most effective and significant to reduce energy consumption. In the lighting system, there are various problems which include waste of energy consumption, inappropriate lighting and increasing greenhouse effect. Therefore, the waste of energy consumption should be reduced by controlling the dimming levels of artificial lighting according to the standard thus reducing the greenhouse effect. Hence, this paper considered the daylight adaptive for the lighting system to determine the dimming level and illuminance level for the office room. The simulation has been carried out using DIALux simulation lighting software to simulate the average daylight and average illuminance level with different conditions sky, which is clear, average, and overcast sky. Based on the result, the illuminance level has complied with the European Standard EN12464-1. Furthermore, the presence of daylight and weather conditions plays an essential role in the lighting system. The illuminance and dimming levels are different depending on the time and type of sky condition at that time. Therefore, the daylight adaptive in the lighting system can reduce the use of artificial light in the room.

Abstract

Flood is one of the most common hazards in Malaysia. Flood effects can be local, or very large, affecting the neighborhood or community and entire river basins. This flood develops slowly; sometimes over a period of days while sometimes develop quickly in just few minutes. With the real time flood information, it will allow public safety organizations and other emergency managers to effectively plan their resource deployment within the limited time of alert. Hence, this project aims to design the solar powered flood alert warning system by using solar energy as the power supply. This system will send message using GSM to the residents to notify them about the flood occurred. In this project, three LEDs were used to indicate the height of the water levels which are safe, alert and danger conditions. Each of the height have different water level that indicates the level of safety for each condition.
