Abstract

Pre-service teachers are agents involved in several teaching training before involving in the professional community. The present study was designed to look at the enactment of Scenario Card-Lesson Study (SCLS), a previously developed learning media. A single pre-service teacher with disabilities was voluntarily involved in the project. Data were garnered through multiple video-recorded observations and checklist documentation. Findings suggest that the participant demonstrated contextual practices of classroom teaching using SCLS. Based on the themed-finding, the participant designed the lesson plan effectively, improved classroom teaching skills, and wrote the lesson study report well. In addition, based on our observation session, The participant also engaged fully in student-student discussion and teacher-student interactions. One tangible finding from this study is that the participant appeared autonomous in designing the teaching and learning plans. Suggestions for policymakers, stakeholders, and future researchers in pre-service teacher education are offered in this paper.

Abstract

The Indonesian learning design of Indonesian for Speakers of Other Language (ISOL) has unique characteristics. This depends on the level of the learner's initial language abilities, age, national origin, learning style, learning goals, and educational background of the learner. One learning design that has its own characteristics is that at a advanced low level it has different characteristics from learners at the level below. Characteristics of advanced low level learners already have sufficiently established language skills. To be able to improve their abilities, teachers must be able to design learning that can develop their Indonesian language skills like native speakers. This research was conducted in the Darmasiswa class at Malang Islamic University in 2019/2020. The learning design used is the ASSURE model, which is a learning design using an approach to classroom orientation.

Abstract

Teaching culture is now highly challanging for teachers of Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (henceforth: BIPA) or Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers since it is conducted online during pandemic. Several strategies had been offered by numerous researchers and educators to be applied in BIPA teaching yet the results remained unsatisfactory. Thus, this study aimed to explore the strategy used in teaching local culture by BIPA teachers during online learning. Using descriptive qualitative design, researchers recruited thirty-three BIPA teachers who have experience teaching local culture for one year. They came from Indonesia, Malaysia, Switzerland, and Philipphines.Triangulation data were applied by distributing the questionnaires, conducting online classroom observation, and doing in-depth interviews. After all data were gathered, researchers followed the Miles and Huberman flow model for analysis. The results showed that BIPA teachers had limited time and interaction in the hard situation during the pandemic, therefore, teaching local culture by using online platform as one of the solutions since the students cannot interact directly with Indonesian speakers was worth to conduct. To support teaching local culture, BIPA teachers implemented three strategies, including watching cultural video shows, simplifying reading, and providing foreign students with more role-playing activities to engage with local cultures material. These strategies adequately assisted them in understanding the concept of Indonesian local culture and supported their communication ability with Indonesian speakers.
