Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine the non-linguistic problems faced by students of the English Department in learning to speak and the steps that must be taken to overcome non-linguistic problems faced by students. This research uses a qualitative approach. Research participants were fifth-semester students of the English Department. The instruments used in this study were semi-structured interviews and closed questionnaires. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using a qualitative data analysis approach. The analysis was carried out in three steps; data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results showed that students experienced difficulties in practicing speaking activities due to non-linguistic factors such as anxiety, nervousness, shame, and self-confidence. Other factors, such as motivation, teaching methods, and teaching materials, also hinder students in learning to speak. However, not all students experience non-linguistic problems in learning to speak. Keywords: non-linguistic; speaking  Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui permasalahan nonlinguistik yang dihadapi mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris dalam pembelajaran berbicara dan langkah-langkah yang harus diambil untuk mengatasi permasalahan nonlinguistik yang dihadapi mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Partisipan penelitian adalah mahasiswa semester lima Jurusan Bahasa Inggris. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah wawancara semi terstruktur dan kuesioner tertutup. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara dan kuesioner. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis data kualitatif. Analisis dilakukan melalui tiga langkah; reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam mempraktikkan kegiatan berbicara karena faktor non kebahasaan seperti kecemasan, gugup, malu dan percaya diri. Faktor lain seperti motivasi, metode pengajaran dan bahan ajar juga menjadi penghambat siswa dalam belajar berbicara. Namun, tidak semua siswa mengalami masalah non-linguistik dalam pembelajaran berbicara. Kata kunci: berbicara; non-linguistik

Abstract

The article examined the experiences of Christian women teachers in the public space of school in Aceh.Based on the narrated biographies of seven teachers, this article focuses on exploring the regulationimpact of Islamic dress code toward formation of Christian women’s identity in Aceh. The source ofdata is collected through observation and semi-structured interviews during 2013- 2014. The articleuses the habitus theory from Bourdieu and the identity concept of ‘in between’ from Bhaba. This articleshows that the public space of school becomes the arena of power contestation between Moslem andthe minority, the Christian women, which led to the inclination of Christian women to wear headscraft.The article also shows that the implementation of Islamic sharia encourages the emergence of hybrididentity of the veiled Christian women. This hybrid identity was born from the result of complicatednegotiation between identities as women teacher, Christian, and citizen of Aceh.

Abstract

This research was conducted to get an overview of local heritage in teaching English in the classroom. The teaching of foreign languages is one of the factors that can affect the neglect of existing local heritage. The teacher understands the concept of cultural heritage or local wisdom. This concept is believed to be important to be applied in language teaching and learning. This is because the teaching materials presented in the English textbook contain language content that is oriented towards general knowledge and cross-cultural knowledge. This study used a qualitative method where the data sampling techniques were carried out by purposive and snowball sampling. In this study, it was found that linking external knowledge and existing knowledge in students' daily lives was considered important to enable students to express themselves in a foreign language. However, teachers are constrained by the existing curriculum targets so that the teaching of local wisdom is solely in the textbooks.

Abstract

Pengukuran terhadap kapabilitas mahasiswa dan alumni dari program studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris (TBI) perlu dimonitoring dan evaluasi secara berkala. Maka tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi kompetensi penggunaan bahasa Inggris oleh mahasiswa dan alumni program studi TBI sebagai modal simbolik untuk mengembangkan diri. Jenis penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan format studi kasus. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah wawancara dan Focus Group Discussion. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa modal simbolik yang dimiliki mahasiswa masih sangat lemah. Mahasiswa tidak memiliki modal yang sesuai dengan program studi untuk mengembangkan dan memberdayakan diri mereka sendiri. Dilihat dari sisi ekonomi, pada mahasiswa dan alumni tidak ditemukan mahasiswa yang memiliki kekuatan modal kapital. Dan dari segi modal budaya, mahasiswa TBI atau alumni belum memiliki karakter yang signifikan baik berupa cara bergaul ataupun cara pembawaaan diri yang menjelaskan bahwa mereka adalah mahasiswa atau alumni program studi ini. Hal ini mengakibatkan sulitnya alumni untuk memberdayakan diri

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the shifting atmeunasah in Langsa City. The shifting is seen from various aspects such as the architectural form and also the values​adopted in the existing meunasah. Although, there are still meunasah that have not been organized in a modern way, the meunasah are still running as usual in a patrilineal society tradition with a strong charismatic power. Thus, all activities are centered on the leader; in this case the tradition in Aceh, that isTeungku, namely Teungku Imum Meunasah. The research methodology uses a phenomenological and historical approach by using data collection tools in the form of observation, documentation and interviews. Then the data is interpreted by data reduction. To strengthen the final results, data cross-checks and triangulation are held, so that the data reached the maximum level. Based on the existing results, currently there are twelve meunasah buildings administratively recorded. All of these meunasah are located in Langsa and in terms of architecture and are multi-functional. The five meunasah are still original. Moreover, there are seven administrative meunasah as meunasah itself, but the shape and model is a Mushala building, and the administrators are Imum Gampong, Imum Dusun, Imum Hafiz, and Imum Rawatib.

Abstract

This study discussed the application of the basic school literacy activity. The purpose of this was to contribute to improving the reading and writing skills of elementary school students. In addition, it aimed to solve the difficulties faced by the school in implementing the school literacy movement. This applied research was conducted for fifteen minutes each day for a period of one month. As participants, there were low-grade students, namely grade one and high-class students which was grade five. The first-grade students numbered about thirty as well as the fifth grade. The research instrument used observation, documentation study and interviews. The results showed that schools have not been able to implement the school literacy movement based on existing provisions. This can be seen from a number of inadequate facilities and the readiness of the teachers as well the students who were difficult to involved in the activity.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the numerous methods and techniques employed to improve the language proficiency of English teachers. English teachers must be able to comprehend and communicate effectively in the language because it is utilized in a variety of situations. The topic of discussion will be the many methods employed to improve the language proficiency of English teachers, and their efficacy in doing so will be assessed. The paper will also look at English teachers' difficulties while attempting to become more fluent in another language. In the end, this essay will present a thorough analysis of the models and techniques employed to help English teachers develop their language proficiency and suggestions for enhancing their language abilities.
