Abstract

Bitter melon contains flavonoids that have anti-inflammatory function. Inflammation can be caused by protein denaturation. This research tested the anti-inflammatory potential of ethanol extract of leaves and bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and protein denaturation inhibition method. There were three experimental groups formed in this research including negative control group, positive control group, and test solutions. Diclofenac sodium was used in the positive control group at concentration series of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 ppm, obtaining a regression equation Y = 3.546X + 2.163 and r = 0.9990. Whilst, for bitter melon ethanol extract at a series of concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 ppm obtained a regression equation Y = 0.243X + 11.74 and r = 0.9995. The potential of diclofenac sodium as an anti-inflammatory agent was shown by IC50 of 13.490 µg / mL, while the ethanol extract of bitter melon fruit has an IC50 of 157.448 µg / mL. This result indicated that bitter melon ethanol extract had the potential as moderate anti-inflammatory agent.

Abstract

Sunlight contains UV rays that adversely affect the skin. These adverse effects can be minimized by the use of UV protective materials, both natural and synthetic. Soursop fruit (Annona muricata L.) has a high content of polyphenol compounds, some vitamins such as vitamin C, B1 and B2. This study aims to determine the activity of UV light protection on soursop juice (Annona muricata L.) by using Sun Protection Factor (SPF) calculation. The measurement of SPF values using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method in the wavelength range from 290-320 nm. The results showed that soursop juice (Annona muricata L.) had UV light protection activity at 1% concentration of 5,188, 3% concentration of 12.242 and 5% concentration of 17,247. The category of SPF values in a row that is medium, maximum and ultra

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the levels of vitamin C and β-carotene in Moringa leaves extract (Moringa oleifera Lam.) using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Vitamin C on Moringa leaves are extracted with ethanol 96%. The extracts obtained was qualitatively analyzed of levels of vitamin C using specific reagents an iodine 1% and ammonium molybdate 5%. Than quantitatively using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at wavelength of 570 nm, obtained an verage grade of 7,96 mg/g. For β-carotene, Moringa leaves were extracted with acetone. The extract obtained was extracted again with ether, then saponified with KHO solvent 15% w/v in methanol, allowed to stand overnight. The extract obtained was extracted again with ether, then freed from wet with distilled water. Extracts were analyzed qualitatively using thin layer chromatography and quantitatively using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at wavelength of 450 nm and obtained an average grade of 3,31 mg/g.

Abstract

This research is about antioxidant activity analysis of Noni products syrup (Morinda citrifolia L.) using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) method. The research aimed to analysis of antioxidant activity of two different brands of Noni products syrup using spectrophotometer UV-Vis. This analysis using quarcetin as standard to determine antioxidant activity and DPPH reagen as radical sources. Quarcetin and  Noni products syrup are made five series concentrations in metanol. One ml of each concentration added 4 ml DPPH 50 µM and then added metanol up to 10 ml in flask. Then incubated for 30 minutes at room temperature and protected from light. Measurement of absorbance using spectrophotometer UV-Vis at 514 nm. The IC50 values were 25.7 µg/mL for brand A, and 9.839 µg/mL for brand B.
