Abstract

Effective teachers are those who are highly engaged and who have an essential role in promoting student motivation and achievement. Thus, this study was conducted to ascertain the engagement of Mathematics teachers and its relation to the learning motivation of students in a state college in the Philippines. It employed the mixed methods, specifically Creswell’s (2014) sequential explanatory approach, with the survey-questionnaire, interview, and focus group discussion as data collection techniques. The findings of the study revealed that teacher’s engagement in Mathematics in terms of “Body Language and Behaviors,” “Consistent Focus,” and “Individual Attention,” were “Very High” while “Rigorous Thinking,” “Meaningfulness of Work,” “Verbal Participation,” “Clarity of Teaching,” “Performance Orientation,” “Interest and Enthusiasm,” and “Confidence,” were only “High.” Meanwhile, students’ motivation to learn Mathematics as to “Relevance,” “Interest,” “Satisfaction,” and “Confidence” were also “High”. The test of hypothesis on significant correlation showed that there was a close association between teacher’s engagement in Mathematics and students’ motivation to learn Mathematics. There was also a corroboration between the quantitative data obtained from the survey and the qualitative data acquired during the interview and focus group discussion. The result further implied that teacher’s high engagement contributes positively to students’ willingness to learn essential concepts and skills in Mathematics.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the impact of the Care for the Non-Readers Program on the reading performance of struggling readers in all elementary schools of Dumingag II District, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines during the School Year 2016-2017. Fifty teachers and 465 parents were selected as respondents of the study. It made use of the descriptive comparative method of research with the questionnaire-checklist as data-gathering instrument. Both the descriptive and inferential statistics were used in the analysis and interpretation of data. The findings of the study revealed that both teachers and parents considered the Care for the Non-Readers Program as “Very Effective” in improving the reading performance of pupils. “Fuller Technique,” “Independent Reading,” “Directed Reading Thinking Activity,” and “Say Something” were the leading strategies applied by teachers in the implementation of the program. The majority of the pupils still belonged to the "Frustration" level. However, there was a significant improvement in pupils’ reading performance for three school years. Teachers encountered "Serious" problems in the implementation of the program, while the suggested solutions were considered as "Very Effective." Furthermore, there was no significant difference between the assessments of the two groups of respondents on the effectiveness of the CNR program.

Abstract

Editorial cartoons have an unchallenged history as a unique and important artefact in both political and cultural discourses. In journalism, they offer varied insights and may eventually alter beliefs and opinions, influence politics, trigger discussions, and give life to ideas. This paper investigates the signs and meanings of editorial cartoons published in a campus newspaper of a tertiary school in the Philippines. It anchors on Chandler’s semiotic concepts in analyzing the editorial cartoons that incorporate both the Saussurean dyadic concept of signs, signifier and signified, and the Peircean triadic concept of signs as symbolic indexical, and iconic. It also considers Leymore’s idea of the figure and ground, which identifies the primary, secondary, and tertiary signifiers based on their importance or impact on editorial cartoons. Analysis shows that editorial cartoons contain all types of signifiers, primary, secondary, and tertiary, which work together to effectively convey the intended meanings to its target readers. These signifiers also possess certain characteristics as being symbolic, indexical, and iconic and they blend together to enrich the editorial cartoons’ intended meanings. Furthermore, these editorial cartoons illustrate the newspaper’s perceptions as well as its stand on various issues and concerns relating or affecting the students and the whole academic community. Although these editorial cartoons are only published in the campus newspaper, they do not only deal with important local issues and concerns but in the national and global spheres as well.

Abstract

This paper critically examines how contemporary Singaporean writers use language in verse, that is poetry, to make vivid representations of Singapore as a nation and discursively construct the social notion of the country's national identity. Utilizing Wodak's (2001) Discourse-Historical framework, this paper reveals how the two authors use some common discursive strategies, mainly representational and predicational, in making explicit representations of Singapore and creating a strong sense of national identity. In their poetry, authors frequently utilize referential linguistic devices such as first personal pronouns to attach specific human traits that help personify Singapore and express an in-group identity that functions as a unifying mechanism that connects Singapore, including its people, together. Lexical repetitions and rhetorical figures are also used to convey more emphasis and reveal the authors' intended meanings or messages. The authors employ various descriptive words to create better and more accurate imageries of Singapore as a varied community and as a nation. Furthermore, the authors' discursive techniques perform both the "constructing" and "preserving" macro-functions by discursively constructing Singapore's national identity as well as making an urgent call to all Singaporeans to safeguard their collective identity.Keywords: contemporary poetry; critical discourse analysis; discursive strat-egies; national identity; Wodak’s (2001) Discourse-Historical Ap-proach Penggambaran Singapura di dalam sajak: Analisa wacana kritis pada puisi kontemporer dan peranannya dalam perkembangan identitas nasionalPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji secara kritis bagaimana penulis Singapura kontemporer menggunakan bahasa dalam sajak, yaitu puisi, utamanya pada puisi, untuk membuat representasi yang jelas  tentang Singapura sebagai sebuah negara. Selain itu penelitian ini secara diskursif membangun gagasan sosial tentang identitas nasional negara tersebut. Dengan menggunakan kerangka wacana-sejarah dari Wodak (2001), hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dua penulis menggunakan dua strategi diskursif yang telah banyak digunakan, yaitu secara representasional dan predikatif, dalam membuat representasi eksplisit dan identitas nasional Singapura yang kuat. Pada puisi mereka, para penulis sering menggunakan perangkat linguistik referensial, seperti kata ganti orang pertama, dalam mencantumkan karakteristik khusus yang dapat menggambarkan warga Singapura dan identitas kelompok yang dapat mempersatukan Singapura, termasuk warga negaranya. Selain itu, pengulangan leksikal dan figur retoris juga digunakan untuk memberikan penekanan dan menunjukkan makna atau pesan yang ingin disampaikan oleh penulis. Para penulis juga banyak menggunakan kata-kata deskriptif untuk menggambarkan citra Singapura sebagai komunitas yang beragam dan sebagai sebuah negara, secara lebih baik dan akurat. Lebih lanjut, penulis dengan teknik diskursif juga melakukan fungsi makro ‘membangun’ dan ‘melestarikan’ untuk membentuk identitas nasional Singapura, serta menyerukan bagi seluruh warga Singapura agar mereka senantiasa menjaga identitas kolektif mereka.Kata kunci: puisi kontemporer, analisis wacana kritis, strategi diskursif, identitas nasional, kerangka wacana-sejarah dari Wodak (2001)
