Abstract

Some of the ulama’s views related to women (the origin of creation, temptressness and lack of rationality), are considered to be biased and misogynistic by M. Quraish Shihab. These viewpoints, according to Shihab, rooted in long-standing old views that harrassed and marginalized women. These views cannot be justified either by reasons or religion, although some of them used religious texts. This article addresses Shihab’s criticism against the views of scholars that he considers to be biased. The data are obtained from the works of M. Quraish Shihab, particularly on Perempuan in addition to al-Misbah. The data are analyzed using content analysis and gender perspectives. The significance of this study is to show that the religious texts (both the Qur’an and Hadith) associated with women tend to be interpreted in accordance with mufassir’s perception.

Abstract

In general there are two schools of thought on whether a Muslim woman can become apolitical leader. One school forbids it, while the other allows it. This study will argue that thecontroversy surrounding women’s political leadership that exists in the Islamic discourse isnot merely a matter of isntinbāţ (deductive inquiry) regarding the meaning of Qur’anic verseand tradition (al-nuşūş) and the difference in dalīl (reference) that is used in interpretation asstated by previous scholar, but also involves various other factors. These factors includepersonal background, ideology and audience. The data has been obtained from studying theQur’anic verse (al-Nisā` /4:34) referred to by those who prohibit female leadership. Theprimary reference is Tafsir al-Mishbah by Quraish Shihab. The data are approached by using adiscourse analysis. The standpoints expressed by this author did not happen in a vacuum, butwere influenced by the author’s perception and the ideology of the interpreter of his work. Thus the significance of this study is to show that Qur’anic verses especially those allied to therole of women, can be construed in various ways that are in accordance with a particularscholar’s propensities.

Abstract

There are various interpretations from some exegetes of the word darajah in verse 228 of al-Baqarah, that “a man has adarajah (superiority) to a woman.” Some of the interpretations of the word darajah according to mufassirs are physical, intelectual, psychological, leadership, material, and divorce. Although the verse contextually is about divorce but limited to the right of a husband toreturn (rujû’) to his wife in the ‘iddah period. Thus, the word darajah in this verse is an explanation to the previous sentences, so this wordhas to be understood in this context
