Abstract

“Salam” is one of the opening expressions in communication. If an opening greeting to non-Muslims is prohibited, how can communication run smoothly, instead of creating harmony among religious believers? The Prophet's hadith which forbids starting “salam” to non-Muslims seems like discrimination. If it continues to be held in the current context, it will be negative patterns of interaction in religious relations and it will be potential for conflict. Therefore, we try to reinterpret the hadith by using Jorge J.E. Gracia’s theory of interpretation function. Thus, we found that this hadith arises in the condition and the situation of the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims is not harmonious because of several factors that occur at the time. This hadith is addressed to certain non-Muslims, not generally. In the present context, “salam” can actually be a mediator in efforts to care for religious harmony, especially in Indonesia as a country with multi-religions.

Abstract

This paper discusses one of the humanitarian problems that still often occurs today, discrimination. Discrimination is not only contrary to human rights but also contrary to the Islamic view which is raḥmah fī al-‘ālamīn. But, in fact, Islam is always suspected as a religion that teaches various forms of discriminatory treatment. The accusation is based on Islamic religious texts which narratively teach discrimination. I find that there are two hadiths that are discriminatory about electing leaders. The first hadith is about having to elect a leader from the Quraysh clan. The second hadith is about the prohibition for women to be a leader. Textually, these hadiths are quite problematic because they contain the narration of racial-ethnic discrimination and gender discrimination. Therefore, in this article, I attempt to reinterpret these hadiths by using a contextual approach by analyzing the language and socio-historical context. My conclusion is that these hadiths were stated by the Prophet Muhammad in temporary cases. Substantially, these hadiths contain the significances that are relevant today.

Abstract

Abraham Geiger stated that the Qur'an took a lot from the teachings of the Jewish religion, both cultural and transcendent. This study aims to discuss and refute the views of an orientalist named Abraham Geiger on the authenticity of the Qur'an. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach. The results and discussion of this study indicate that Abraham Geiger's accusation that the Koran is only a reflection of Muhammad on Judaism and Christianity is a false accusation. The accusations made by Abraham Geiger do not eliminate the authenticity of the Qur'an as the holy book of Muslims, because historical facts prove that the entire contents of the Qur'an were narrated by many people who continued the chain to the Messenger of Allah. If the criteria for news of mutawatir are mentioned, then the Qur'an has met that criterion.
