Abstract

The Second Vatican Council is not just an important moment in the history of the Catholic Church, but for all Christian Churches. The conciliar moment was an integral part of verbum dei, a divine statement, which was not only spoken to the Catholic Church but to the entire Body of Christ, including the Protestant Churches. This essay highlights a number of issues regarding the impact the council has had on the renewal of Protestant Churches, in particular the Protestant Church in Timor (GMIT) including our understanding of the Church’s mission, ecumenical relations, the development of contextual theology, and also about the place and role of women in the Church. Abstract

Recalling the Reformation movement of five hundred years ago provides us, the Churches throughout the world, with an opportunity to undertake a critical reflection on the meaning of the Reformation for us. In the Indonesian context, in particular relating to the relationship between Church and State, and the function of the Church in politics, we can learn from the legacy of John Calvin. This Reformation figure underlined the importance of separating the function of Church officials from that of State officials. Church pastors/ shepherds are responsible for taking care of the spiritual needs and the education of God’s people so that they can participate in politics as a faith responsibility. This is a duty that needs to be carried out with full commitment. Meanwhile the government and politicians work for the wellbeing of the people in the civic and governance spheres. Church and State have their own particular spheres of operation that should never be confused. Keywords: John Calvin, the reforms, ecclesiastical office, a Protestant church, politics, Indonesia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Memperingati lima ratus tahun gerakan Reformasi memberikan kepada kita, Gereja-gereja di seluruh dunia, kesempatan untuk melakukan refleksi kritis atas makna Reformasi bagi kita. Abstract

Half century after the anti-Communist Tragedy in Indonesia, including East Nusa Tenggara Province, one of the important questions need to be coped with is the impact of the Tragedy to the perpetrators. Some of those who took part in the arrest, persecution, and murder of the victims, are still alive. Because of the taboo of talking about the Tragedy and its impact among Indonesia society, they hide their feeling for nearly 50 years. They hold guilty/sin, shame, and hero feelings at the same time. Their narratives offer us rich theological themes and pastoral challenge. This paper tries to identify the theological themes arose in the narratives of some perpetrators.

Abstract

Protestant churches in Indonesia, including in West Timor, still find it difficult to articulate the relationship between living believers and their deceased family members and ancestors. This article aims to develop a contextual theology of holy communion in West Timor. The article draws upon a dialogue between the practice of offering woven cloths to bereaved families among the Timaubus community in Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, with the Christian observance of holy communion (communio sanctorum). In the Timaubus tradition, when a close relative dies, women present woven cloths, which serve not only as a sign of solidarity and support for the bereaved family (amut) but also as provisions for the deceased and a deposit for the ancestors (sofit). At burial, a woven cloth from the closest relative is placed in the coffin as a gift to the ancestors. This article suggests that Christians in Timor offer woven cloths to bereaved families and their deceased, as an expression of their faith in relation to holy communion. Our study employs qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, observations, focus group discussions, and literature review. We utilize Elizabeth Johnson’s feminist theology to create a dialogue between the practice of presenting woven cloths at death and feminist theological principles concerning communio sanctorum.
