Abstract

This paper discusses refusals in English and in Indonesian and is presented within the framework of pragmatics. The goal is to describe and compare the language politeness strategies used in refusals of both languages. Three hundred and ninety refusals in English and 390 refusals in Indonesian were used as data corpus. Both languages employ some strategies found in Brown and Levinson’s compiled language politeness strategies. However, as compared to refusals in Indonesian, more refusals in English are expressed in single speech acts and combination of two speech acts. Fewer refusals are expressed in combination of three and four speech acts. Refusals in English and in Indonesian also have different inclination in the use of speech act types to express refusals.

Abstract

Education for women, which is at first intended to transform them to be good mothers in raising their children, especially in providing basic education of religion for them, has become a boomerang. Religion and education transform women into religious and intellectual figures. They start to realize and think of their existence. They are different from men only physically, but it does not necessarily mean that they are also intellectually different. They prove themselves that they are able to develop their intellectuality if there is the opportunity. They become women who are thinking, confident, brave, and self-sufficient. Their role and activities in religion show their potency.

Abstract

Di dalam tulisan ini akan dibahas secara ringkas tata bahasa teks lisan bahasa Ngadha (Flores, Nusa Tenggara Tlmur). Teks lisan direkam pada tanggal 6 Januari 1994 di kampung Watujaji atau Ngadha-Mana yang saat itu merayakan pesta adat Reba, yakni "pemujaan" kepada UBI (Uvi, sejerus ubi besar, dikenal dengan nama asing Dioscorea atau yam root) untuk memperingati "Tahun Baru" adat. Pusat perhatian adalah pada tata bahasa teks yang merupakan abstraksi dari sistem aturan kebahasaan dalam penggunaan --dalam studi ini penggunaan secara terbatas. Sebagai hasil proses abstraksi diharapkan bahwa suatu sistem tata bahasa itu abstrak dan tidak terikat pada konteks situasi. Berturut-turut akan dipaparkan: tata bunyi, tata satuan kata, frasa, klausa dan strategi pembentukan teks dan maknanya.
