Abstract

Problem-solving skills are one of the core skills in mathematics learning; this skill helps the student be an effective problem solver. Conditions in the field show that the problem-solving skills of Indonesian students are currently low. This study aims to know the improvement of problem-solving skills and the description of that skill in terms of learning styles in problem-based learning assisted by Assemblr based on Javanese culture augmented reality. The research method used was a mixed method with a sequential explanatory strategy. Data collection techniques included tests, questionnaires, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed through statistical tests and groupings of student learning styles. Qualitative data analysis was carried out through data collection, reduction, presentation, conclusions, and triangulation techniques. This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design with a random sampling technique, and research subjects was selected by purposive sampling based on learning styles. Results show that there are no students with an auditory learning style. Students’ problem-solving skills increased with the n-gain score, which is 0.5 in the moderate category. In terms of learning styles based on Polya’s stages, show that students' problem-solving skills with visual, kinesthetic, and visual-kinesthetic styles are quite good. Students can understand problems, formulate problem-solving plans, and carry out formulations, but students with visual and kinesthetic learning styles are still not careful in calculations and re-checking answers, while students with visual-kinesthetic learning styles do not re-check their answers. Further research is expected to examine all learning styles, including auditory learning styles.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are essential in mathematics learning; however, students’ critical thinking skills at SMP Negeri 41 Semarang remain relatively low. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by an ethnomathematics-based Flipbook of Semarang City on students’ critical thinking skills and to describe these skills based on cognitive style. The study employed a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design with a true experimental pretest–posttest control group design. The sample consisted of students from classes IX C and IX D in the 2025/2026 academic year, while six students were selected as qualitative subjects based on Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD) cognitive styles. The results show that the PBL model assisted by the Flipbook was effective, as indicated by individual  and classical mastery . The experimental group achieved a higher N-Gain than the control group and showed a significant difference based on the Independent Samples t-test . Furthermore, students with a Field Independent cognitive style obtained a higher mean score  than those with a Field Dependent cognitive style . Qualitative findings indicate that Field Independent students met critical thinking indicators well, while Field Dependent students met the indicators adequately. In conclusion, the PBL model assisted by an ethnomathematics-based Flipbook is effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills and reveals differences in performance based on cognitive style. This study contributes by providing an integrated instructional approach combining PBL, ethnomathematics, and digital Flipbook media while considering cognitive styles to enhance students’ critical thinking skills in mathematics learning.

Abstract

The difference in mind styles is one of the challenges to improving students' mathematical creative thinking ability—learning activities with a project-based e-learning model as an alternative to solve problems. The research aims to describe mathematical creative thinking ability in Gregorc mind styles with a project-based e-learning model. Gregorc mind style consists of concrete sequential (CS), abstract sequential (AS), concrete random (CR), and abstract random (AR). The mixed research method begins with quantitative research and then continues qualitatively. This research was conducted on vector material for class X high school students. The sampling technique is a probabilistic stratified sampling type where samples are taken in each Gregorc mind style with proportions according to their presence in the population. Students with CS mind styles dominated the results of the study. At the same time, students with AS mind styles were not found. The ANOVA test showed a significance value of 0,952 > 0,05, so there was no difference in mathematical creative thinking abilities in Gregorc's mind styles. However, every student with different mind styles has different achievement aspects of mathematical creative thinking ability. Therefore, three subjects were taken using each Gregorc mind style in the qualitative research stage. Students with the CS mind style can achieve the elaboration aspect well, but the originality aspect cannot be completed well. On the other hand, the originality aspect can be achieved very well by students with an AR mind style.
