Abstract

This article discusses about categories of freeware that become considerable tools and skills for 21st century language teachers. It investigatesthe course of language laboratory management subject the writers introduced during the lecturesin the last semester. The writer assumes that the 21st century language teachers are expected to have competence in preparing and managing both face-to-face and online learning. The writers assume that by using freeware teachers can support the antipiracy campaign, and it is the cheapest and safest way anyone can afford, instead of using unauthorized or pirated software. There are four categories of freeware that will be discussed: 1) audio editing tools to record and edit audio files for teaching listening skills; 2). language laboratory management software; 3) software for creating the e-learning materials such as hot potatoes and moodle; and 4) video editing and subtitling tools.

Abstract

This research was to determine the impact of using the "peer-assessment" technique through "google classroom" on student’s writing skills. The sample of this research is the students of class X SMP Indonesian Language. Students of grade ten C for control and grade ten D for the treatment class. The sample were all the students in that class. As the representative of the population, convenience sampling is part of the non-probability sampling used by researchers. Written test was chosen as the research instrument. For the calibration of the items, the researcher used indicators as an assessment rubric by using pre-test and post-test to determine the results of learners' writing skills. The results of this study are the average score (x) of the pre-test learners from treatment was 44 and the average score of the post-test learners as a variable (x) is 71.25. However, the mean score (x) pre-achievement of the learners from the control class was 49.25 and the average score was 79.75. Fulfillment of raters for Google Classroom was insignificant for the learners' composing skills, experimental learners' scores are not better than the control class. Another hypothesis was rejected. The results of the statistical analysis the items showed for the value of sig (2tailed) post-test score was greater than the value (0.92 > 0.05). Therefore, we can conclude that H0 (zero hypothesis) of this study is acceptable.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the process of improving the  students’ listening skill and vocabulary mastery through contextual teaching and learning (CTL) by using online learning at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Sajira. This study also attempts to find out the improvement of the students’ skill in listening and vocabulary mastery through contextual teaching and learning (CTL) by using online learning. The method used in this research was qualitative research method by implementing classroom action research (CAR). This research was conducted in three cycles actions in cycle I, cycle 2 and cycle 3. The result of the research is the use of contextual teaching and learning (CTL) by using online learning can improve the students’ listening skill and vocabulary mastery. The finding of the research are (1) the process of teaching and learning using CTL through online learning is conducted successfully in terms of the feeling of happiness and enthusiasm of the students, (2) there is an improvement of the students’ listening skill from 57.85 in pre-test became 81.11 in post-test. This study proves that English teacher can improve students’ listening and vocabulary mastery by optimizing the use of materials at school, and be creative in selecting, developing, and giving materials at class.
