Abstract

Phrasal verb is one of the important components in the process of learning a foreign language. It is one form of vocabulary in the collection of words that make up the phrase where the verb is the word that heads the phrase. Students can not interpret phrasal verb partially but it must be interpreted collectively. The understanding of Politeknik of Tonggak Equator Pontianak sudents toward phrasal verb need to be known considering many literatures and terms used in the teacing and learing process. In doing this research, the method used is descriptive by describing the condition of students through recording their activity and identifies problems in using phrasal verb. Techniques of data collecting are interviews and tests to obtain a description of students understanding of the use of phrasal verb. Filling in the blank form of test is used in order to know the understanding of students toward the use of phrasal verb in sentence, while interviews conducted to match test answers with oral answers. Some students still have difficulty in understanding the phrasal verb. Students are still fixated on sentence patterns and think that phrasal verb is a phrase that can be translated word by word.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the usage of the Translate Tool in converting English text at Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing Students. The analysis is based on Translation Tools that commonly used by students to help in learning. Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing is one of the colleges in Pontianak and one of the subjects that is taught in translation. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The writer took 15 students of Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing as a participant. These 15 students having a high score in translation subjects and frequently using the Translation Tool for writing or speaking in class. The result of the interview tells that the use of a translation tool in converting text from a book and help them understand instruction that is given by the lecturer. Translation tool helps students to understand the instruction easily and make their work quicker compared to manual process. The feature of translation tool is easy to use that make this application is easily operated; moreover, The students are not only helped to convert for their field of study, but the application also can be used to help students converting another field of study that is not learnt by them.

Abstract

Students’ collaboration is essential for the construction of effective, deep, and reflective learning. In the context of computer-mediated learning, students’ collaboration was facilitated by discussion forum. While discussion forum is used among distanced learners, there is still lack of knowledge on what really happens when students participate in the discussion forum. This study shed lights on students’ engagement in three discussion forums of two language skill courses (Speaking 1 and Writing 1) conducted asynchronously. The engagement was measured from (i) students’ posts or comments to see how much students’ participation in the forum, (ii) engagement patterns they formed, and (iii) how such collaboration reflected the phases of practical inquiry in online-mediated learning. Results showed that during online-asynchronous seminars, students’ participation was minimal and teachers’ posts were prevalent with posts on confirming students’ answers. This type of interaction, in turns, resulting in a one-way serial monologue – students did not response to each other posts. Analysis on practical inquiry model also confirmed the findings that students’ engagements were in the level of triggering event by which students only responded to the teacher’s thread and did not respond to each other posts. Students’ exchange of information was not negotiated, thus not allowing students to move forwards to integration and resolution phases. The findings were linked with the tasks set out by the teachers in both courses.
