Abstract

The car wash wastewater has a proportion of detergent  and it can cause considerable impacts to pollute the environment and health if they are not processed in well. SSVF CW is one of  an alternative wastewater treatment, because it has the advantage such as wastewater flowing below the surface of the media so it  reduces the smell of wastewater. The objective of this study was to determine the  removal efficiency of reducing pollutants in the wastewater of treated car wash by Constructed Wetland and the influence of Chrysopogon zizanioides rhizosphere depth in supplying DO distribution. This experimental laboratory scale study used 2 PVC for reactor. Each pipe has 4 sampling points. The DO was measured from different depth, while the other parameters were from the effluent. The ratio of the media used was  1:3:2:4 from the top to the bottom. The SSVF CW system had high TSS removal efficiency of 94.74%, while the removal efficiency of COD, Detergent, and Phosphate was76.21%, 54.54%, 30.65%, respectively. DO distribution at a depth of 84 cm in both pipes increased even though the root zone was only 26.5 cm.

Abstract

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment in 2014 released study results that 60-70% of rivers in Indonesia have been polluted by domestic wastewater, which is not treated properly. Improper and inadequate wastewater treatment not only pollutes water resources and damages ecosystems, but can also pose a significant public health risk. The development of spontaneous settlements in urban kampong makes the environmental quality within the settlements getting worse and many people consider that the area of urban kampong is not habitable. The efforts to treat wastewater before being discharged into water bodies are very important. The study of "vertical constructed wetland" model using water plants which are also ornamental plants can be considered as an alternative system for household wastewater treatment in kampong settlements.  The objective of the research is to develop an alternative model of wastewater treatment that can overcome the obstacles of implementing a wastewater treatment system in terms of cost and availability land. The result shows that the removal efficiency of BOD, phosphate and total coliform are 71.64%, 50,92% and 99.67% respectively. Since the research is still being conducted on a laboratory scale, the further study must be developed with real case studies in low income community settlements in Kampung Kota. Additionally this research can give suggestions to local government an alternative policy to implement domestic waste water treatment plan in a densely populated settlement along the riverbank in the city.

Abstract

A Constructed Wetland (CW) is a modified wastewater treatment system that can be applied anywhere. The advantages of CW systems are low operational costs, naturally available constituent materials and provide aesthetic value as a wastewater treatment solution. The increasing number of laundry industries causes high concentrations of phosphate pollution in the environment. Shards of tile as an adsorbent may reduce the concentration of Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), phosphate, Methylene Blue Active Surfactant (MBAS), and sulphate. The effect of adding tile fragments is supported by using Water Jasmine plants (Echinodorus palaefolius) and the diversity of microorganisms attached to the adsorbent. The results of this study showed a phosphate reduction efficiency of 99.96%. The presence of the bacterial genus Proteus sp. and Citrobacter sp. on the tile fragments adsorbent impacts phosphate reduction. Pollutant removal in CW systems occurs due to adsorption, sedimentation, filtration, biodegradation and precipitation.
