Abstract

Heavy metals concentrations exceeding the recommended threshold are hazardous for the environment, so there is a need for handling it safely. The purpose of this research was to determine the adsorption capacity and kinetics of adsorption. This research uses an adsorption method in the process of removing Pb(II) heavy metal ions using persimmon tannin gel. Besides the influence of contact time, pH, and the concentration of Pb(II) metal ions on adsorption, a kinetics study was also carried out. The adsorption rate is obtained through the adsorption rate constant (K) and the reaction order generated from the kinetics model. Based on the results of the research, showed the optimum adsorption process, which is 20 minutes and at a pH of 5. The maximum adsorption capacity of 17.62 mg/g with the value of the standard energy changes of Gibbs adsorption (-ΔG° = -14.274 kJ/moll) indicates that the adsorption takes place through physical interaction. The kinetic adsorption gives the adsorption rates a constant of, k = 0.008231 g/mg.min.

Abstract

Research on the equilibrium and adsorption kinetics of methylene blue dye using tannin gel from the Tingi tree (Ceriops tagal) has been carried out. This study aims to determine the capacity and adsorption kinetics of tannin gel against methylene blue dye. Several parameters, such as the effect of contact time, pH, and methylene blue dye concentration on adsorption, were also studied. Based on the research results, the optimum adsorption process is a contact time of 30 minutes and a pH of 7. The adsorption capacity increased to a concentration of 80 mg/L with a maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of 49.261 mg/g. The adsorption process follows the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model.

Abstract

Abstract

In this work, we investigated the effects of the heavy metal initial concentration and the pH on the sorption of heavy metal ions onto carbon nanofibers using the liquid phase adsorption technique under ultrasonic energy irradiation. These data were then used to study thermodynamic aspects such as sorption capacity and energy and kinetic parameters such as kinetic model, reaction order, and rate constant of heavy metal sorption on carbon nanofibers. We found that the increase of the heavy metal (nickel) initial concentration was proportional to the amount of heavy metal adsorbed onto carbon nanofibers. The highest uptake of the heavy metal ions' amount onto carbon nanofibers in equilibrium (qe) was 244.00 mg.g-1, achieved at the pH of 8. Langmuir and Freundlich's isotherms were used to find the best-fitted isotherms model. The Langmuir isotherm best fits the sorption equilibrium of the heavy metal ions on Carbon nanofibers. Bothipseudo-first and pseudo-second orders studied the sorption and kinetic parameters of heavy metals on carbon nanofibers. The sorption kinetics model was fitted to the pseudo second-order. Based on the value of Gibbs free energy, the metal ions' sorption onto carbon nanofibers occurs spontaneously.

Abstract

This study evaluates the potential of Kendari Bay sediment as an alternative source of electrical energy through the dual-chamber Sediment Microbial Fuel Cell (SMFC) technology. The research focused on sediment characterization, performance analysis using an aerator and KMnO₄, post-operation substrate changes, and the identification of electrogenic bacteria. The results showed that the sediment contained 43.24% moisture, 4.23% organic carbon, 1.08% total nitrogen, a C/N ratio of 3.92, pH 7.38, and conductivity of 11.56 mS. The SMFC generated a voltage of 0.404 V (aerator) and 1.628 V (KMnO₄), along with a current of 5.0 µA. After SMFC operation, organic content decreased, with 42.65% moisture, 4.06% organic carbon, 0.97% total nitrogen, a C/N ratio of 4.19, pH 7.86, and conductivity of 15.78 mS. Identified bacteria were Gram-positive Bacillus spp. These findings demonstrate that aerator and KMnO₄ application in dual-chamber SMFC significantly enhance energy conversion efficiency using marine sediment.
