Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was intended to describe how Project Based Learning (PBL) could improve students’ speaking ability. This research was carried out to the fact that the students in one of private colleges in Malang faced some speaking problems such as anxiety and limited linguistic competence. The researcher believed that BPL could solve her teaching problem since some research as Permatasari (2013) and Maulany (2013) had come into conclusion that PBL could enhance students’ speaking skill and promote students’ collaborative skill. Following, the previous research, the findings of this particular research, which were revealed from various instruments, agree that PBL can provide optimum opportunity for the students to explore and practice speaking skill so that they can improve their speaking ability. Besides, the findings of the research show that this strategy had challenged the students to demonstrate their team –work ability.

Abstract

Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa kelas x di SMK PGRI Pakis-Malang dalam memahami teks naratif. Penelitian ini perlu dilakukan karena hasil dari preliminary study menunjukan bahwa siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami teks naratif. Selain itu, informasi dari guru menunjukan bahwa siswa memiliki motivasi yang rendah dan kurang bias bekerjasama dalam pembelajaran membaca teks naratif. Dengan menggunakan instrumen yang berupa kuesioner, lembar observasi, catatan lapangan, dan tes yang diterapkan pada dua siklus, ditemukan bahwa teknik KWL mampu meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam memahami teks naratif. Secara kualitatif, terbukti bahwa siswa lebih  antusias dalam mengikuti pelajaran karena mereka memeliki kesempatan berinteraksi dengan teman sejawat, serta memiliki pengalaman baru dalam belajar. Secara kuantitatif, terbukti bahwa 25 siswa dari 27 siswa memiliki nilai kemampuan membaca yang melebihi KKM sekolah. Penemuan ini memberi informasi bagi para pendidik yang menghadapi persoalan yang sama untuk mencoba mengadopsi ataupun mengadaptasi teknik KWL dalam proses pembelajaran

Abstract

This content analysis was intended to analyze the physical and cognitive designs of a teaching video for Basic Speaking course developed for Z generation at IKIP Budi Utomo Malang. In order to get precise analysis, the researchers involved four English teachers, who teach Basic Speaking, to observe and score the video. To get objective scores, the four teachers were requested to use scoring rubric assessment adapted from (Morain and Swarts, 2012 in Tolentino 2016:109); besides they were also asked to give additional comments on the quality of the video. After the scores and comments were gathered and interpreted, it can be noticed that the video entitled “Dare to Speak Up” was categorized as a good video. Therefore, those who teach Speaking for beginners are suggested to use this video as one of learning sources. Even though the video was declared to be good, its effectiveness still remained unanswered. Accordingly, further researchers are motivated to do an experimental research to measure the effectiveness of the video.

Abstract

Covid 19 outbreak have made all sectors to switch their performance from face to face interaction to virtual ones; from massive gathering and meetings to social distancing. This is also applied in education sector. This study was intended to describe how teaching and learning process took place during the Covid 19 outbreak. This study focused on the teaching and learning process in pre-school level as the researchers wondered how teachers facilitated learning for young learners. From the interview, the researchers noticed that all teachers used WhatsApp to get themselves connected to their students. In addition, they also send the student work book to their students’ houses. Next, two teachers needed to teach some students in the classroom as learning from home did not work for few students, the numbers of the students and the meetings of course were limited. The findings of this studies were expected to give insights to stake holders, policy makers, education experts, and scientist to help teachers and learners at pre-school level so that they still can achieve the teaching and learning objectives during the Covid 19 outbreak
